Nikki Grimes is an author of books written for children and young adults, a poet, and journalist.

Grimes was born in Harlem, New York. She has stated: "Books were my survival tools. They were how I got by, and how I coped with things. Books carried me away."

She has been a guest lecturer at schools in Sweden, Tanzania, China, and Russia. She has written articles for magazines such as Today’s Christian Woman and Essence.

Grimes is the recipient of the 2022 Virginia Hamilton Lifetime Achievement Award. Her novel Bronx Masquerade received a Coretta Scott King Award in 2002. In 2017, she was awarded the Laura Ingalls Wilder Medal. She is also the recipient of the 2006 National Council of Teachers of English Award for Excellence in Poetry for Children.
