Dr. Nathan Hare
Dr. Nathan Hare is often called "the father of black studies." On February 1, 1968, he was hired at San Francisco State, as the first coordinator of a black studies program in the United States, to write a proposal for the first department of black studies. Then two semesters later he was fired in the face of his refusal to help the notoriously hard-line college president S. I. Hayakawa break a five-months strike by a campus-wide multiracial coalition of thousands of students and faculty members. Months after his firing for his role in the largely successful black student led strike for an autonomous department of black studies and a school of ethnic studies, Dr. Hare became the founding publisher of The Black Scholar.
Dr. Hare presently remains with The Black Think Tank and in the private practice of psychology in San Francisco, for more than thirty years in the same location (in the historic building that was once the home of Mary Ellen Pleasant, the controversial black abolitionist who was a supporter of John Brown but counseled him in vain to delay his going to Harper's Ferry). Today, the San Francisco Bay Area African-American Historical and Cultural Society identifies Mary Ellen Pleasant on a monument to her on the grounds of the site where she lived, at 1801 Bush Street (at the corner of Octavia), as a leader of the "Western Terminus of the Fugitive Slave Underground Railroad from 1850 to 1865." Dr. Hare was selected an honorary member of the Board of Directors of the San Francisco Bay Area African-American Historical and Cultural Society, in 1981.
Dr. Julia Hare
Dr. Julia Hare is widely regarded as one of the most dynamic motivational speakers on the nation's podiums today. The Black Think Tank has decided to turn her loose on the lecture circuit this fall. If you have ever had the satisfaction of hearing this sista speak, you already know why she is gaining so much notice and popularity at conference gatherings and campuses across America and even creating excitement in other lands. The largest black newspaper in London, The Voice, recently dubbed this genteel woman of class and charm a “lady Malcolm X” in a feature story of how she is, quote, “setting the black world on fire” after she electrified the Tavis Smiley “State of the Black Union Conference” with her breakout blast of velvety tough-talk about the difference between “black leaders” and “leading blacks.”
YouTube clip picked it up and clocked a million hits from around the world. In an editorial beside its two-page feature story, The Voice said further that “We Need Black Leaders Not Leading Blacks,” and “thanks to Internet sites like YouTube, Dr. Hare’s powerful and at times amusing comments on modern black life have reached out to people everywhere. In Britain, many ‘in the know’ are starting to talk about her…Her comments about the differences between ‘black leaders’ and ‘leading blacks’ absolutely strikes the nail on the head…The likes of Martin Luther King have been replaced by media appointed ‘leading blacks’ who have got to their positions of influence by pretending to the establishment that they have the ear of black people."
Dr. Julia Hare speaking at the State of the Black Union (2007) on education, destruction of the Diasporic African family in America, incarceration, and other issues.

Others have likewise praised The Endangered Black Family and its novel insights into black male/female relations, black family destruction and black male suppression particularly after the black male was placed on a backburner from 1969 to 1984.. Called prescient and complimented for its foresight in today, The Endangered Black Family is the final and compelling compendium of fifteen years of relentless investigation by a husband-wife team, told in the lucid language of the layman, yet documented and authoritative.” Written by the founding editors of the journal, Black Male/Female relationships, The Endangered Black Family is widely regarded as the most insightful and courageous book ever written on the subject of black male/female conflict and trouble. Aside from an account of how the family and reproductive agendas of a white dominated society agitated the decay of the black family and family relationships, this book spotlights a plethora of insights and information in chapters such as:

To overhaul the public schools and educate every black man, woman and child: The Hare Plan. This is for those who think black children and their schools are hopeless.
The Miseducation of the Black Child came straight out of The Black Think Tank, based on living lessons learned by individuals who have taught in the public schools of the District of Columbia, Chicago and San Francisco, fueled by clinical observation as well as academic and informal interaction with late 1960s college student activists, community and street intellectuals at Howard University as well as the battlegrounds of the strike for black studies at San Francisco State, creatively applied to overhauling the public schools and educating every black man, woman and child.

Black Anglo Saxons are distinguished chiefly by their endeavors to
dis-identify with the black race out of a thwarted wish to be identified as
white. This underground classic is a penetrating often humorous analysis of
a particular portion of the black middle class that disidentifies with the
black race in search of psychological and social distance from it, in
preference for identifying with the white Anglo Saxons. Black Anglo Saxons
are persons who have become white minds in black bodies go to sleep at night
and dream that they will wake up white, only to awake to the indelible fact
that they will never get out of the black race alive. (Note that some of
them today are “afro-centric,” called “Nouveau Blacks” in the late 1960s as
chronicled by The Black Anglo Saxons, though Nouveau Blacks may be
distinguished from “bourgies” and “oreos” and “coconuts” per se).
The late sociologist, Oliver Cox, placed The Black Anglo Saxons in “the
Black Bourgeoisie School” with E. Franklin Frazier’s Black Bourgeoisie
(first published in France as Borgeoisie Noir) and Carter G. Woodson’s
self-published black classic, The Miseducation of the Negro.
An underground classic, The Black Anglo Saxons was first published in 1965,
by New York’s Marzani and Munsell (which the book outlasted); a second
edition, in 1970, was distributed through Collier-Macmillan by Thunder and
Lighting Press, which the book also outlasted; the Third World Press Edition
has been in print since 1991. The Black Anglo Saxons may also be ordered
from Black Think Tank Books.
