Stephen Bentley, creator of Herb
& Jamaal, first became interested in cartooning in grade school as a means to
increase his popularity. Later Bentley realized he could make a living with his craft.
The six-year-old comic strip blends characters that represent different sides of
Bentleys personality with current societal issues. Bentley was inspired to create
the strip after attending a high school reunion where he began to think about the way the
personalities and aspirations of teenagers change when they enter adulthood.
During a tour of duty in the Navy, Bentley illustrated stories and drew comic strips
for a hospital base newspaper. After the service, Bentley attended college majoring in
commercial illustration.
Born and raised in California, Bentley currently lives in Southern California with his
wife and daughter.
