With no job prospects, Pamela feels backed into a corner and decides to get her "hustle" on. As a female caught up in a male-dominated game, Pamela relies on her alter-ego, Carmen, to deal with the streets, playas, dealers, drug lords, and of course, the law.

In no time, Carmen is on top running a call-girl service, fencing operation, and drug cartel--and add to that, being a mom. With money on her mind and her mind on money, Carmen's hustle is taking the streets by storm but the ever-present danger brought on by the police and rival hustlers makes staying in the game perilous.

Carmen wants out the game but her powerful drug connect, Dragos, wants her in. If she stays in, the police will force her to implicate Dragos. Her love interest, Delano, a noble hustler, wants Carmen out the game at all costs. Her first love and father of her son, Chino, wants Carmen in the game so he can connect with Dragos. .

Carmen's made enough money and she wants out. But can she get out alive? And can she get out in time? Can Carmen, her infant son, and Delano live happily ever after? Vickie M. Stringer adroitly weaves fact and fiction and has written the most honest, provocative and compelling novel of the "Bad-Girl" genre

by Brett Pulley

ISBN: 0471423637
Format: Hardcover, 240pp
Pub. Date: April 2004
Publisher: Wiley, John & Sons, Incorporated

The American dream is still alive, and if you don't believe it just take a close look at Robert L. Johnson, the founder of Black Entertainment Television (BET) and a man who has traveled the classic American journey from humble origins to unimaginable wealth. Born to a poor family in Mississippi, Johnson, the son of factory workers and the only one among his ten siblings to attend college, parlayed a $15,000 loan in 1979 into Black Entertainment Television, one of the cable industry's richest franchises.

Written by award-winning journalist Brett Pulley, The Billion Dollar BET is the first-ever in-depth look at one of the most enigmatic and important entrepreneurs of our time. This revealing book offers a colorful portrait of a brilliant and relentlessly focused businessman, whose life is a window into race, culture, and capitalism. From Johnson's rural Mississippi roots and early years in blue-collar Illinois, to his graduate life at Princeton University and career as a cable industry lobbyist on Capitol Hill, The Billion Dollar BET traces his inspired climb to the top and his often controversial tenure at the helm of one of the most influential media outlets in the country. You'll discover how Johnson won the support of media titans John Malone and Sumner Redstone, and watch as BET begins to take on far greater social significance than even Johnson could ever have imagined. You'll also learn how Johnson handled pivotal events in the company's history, such as the public attacks on BET's program content and the decision to sell the firm to media giant Viacom.

Much more than a corporate analysis of profits and losses, The Billion Dollar BET is a story about savvy, vision, timing, determination, failure, scandal, love, and sex -- all the things that occur behind the scenes as a company and its leader grow up. It reveals an ambition and fiery determination that burned so hot that friendships were shattered, family relationships destroyed, and hearts broken. Filled with revealing anecdotes and never-reported details of Johnson's life and business acumen, The Billion Dollar BET is a classic American business tale.

ISBN: 0393058972
Format: Hardcover, 416pp
Pub. Date: April 2004
Publisher: Norton, W. W. & Company, Inc

On May 17, 1954, the Supreme Court ruled unanimously that the doctrine of "separate but equal" was unconstitutional. Charles J. Ogletree, Jr., was not even two at the time, and his family, farm workers in southern California, had scant knowledge of how keenly the ruling would affect them. In All Deliberate Speed Ogletree examines the personal ramifications of the decision for him and his familyhis childhood in the wake of the Brown decision, his student days at Stanford and Harvard Law, his immersion in the Boston busing crisisand its meaning for all Americans. Presenting a vivid pageant of historical characters including Thurgood Marshall, Martin Luther King, Jr., Earl Warren, Anita Hill, and Clarence Thomas, Ogletree discusses the ambivalence of our judicial system, the increasing legal challenges to affirmative action, and the issue of reparations. Brown V Board of Education: Caste, Culture, and the Constitution (Landmark Law Cases and American Society)
Click to order via
Amazon

by Robert J. Cottrol,

ISBN: 0700612890
Format: Paperback, 272pp
Pub. Date: September 2003
Publisher: University Press of Kansas

Before 1954, both law and custom mandated strict racial segregation throughout much of the nation. That began to change with Brown v. Board of Education, the landmark decision that overturned the pernicious "separate but equal" doctrine. In declaring that legally mandated school segregation was unconstitutional, the Supreme Court played a critical role in helping to dismantle America's own version of apartheid, Jim Crow.

This new study of Brown--the title for a group of cases drawn from Kansas, Virginia, South Carolina, Delaware, and the District of Columbia--offers an insightful and original overview designed expressly for students and general readers. It is concise, up-to-date, highly readable, and very teachable.

Their book traces the lengthy court litigations, highlighting the pivotal role of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People and including incisive portraits of key players, including co-plaintiff Oliver Brown, newly appointed Chief Justice Earl Warren, NAACP lawyer and future Supreme Court justice Thurgood Marshall, and Justice Felix Frankfurter, who recognized the crucial importance of a unanimous court decision and helped produce it. The authors simply but powerfully narrate their story and show that Brown not only changed the national equation of race and caste--it also changed our view of the Court's role in American life.

As we prepare to commemorate the decision's fiftieth anniversary in May 2004, this book invites readers to appreciate the lasting importance of what was indisputably a landmark case.

This book is part of the Landmark Law Cases and American Society series.

The DestructionDestruction of Black Civilization: Great Issues of a Race from 4500 B.C. to 2000 A.D.

by Chancellor Williams

ISBN: 0883780305
Format: Paperback, 384pp
Pub. Date: May 1975
Publisher: Third World Press

The Destruction of Black Civilization took Chancellor Williams sixteen years of research and field study to compile. The book, which was to serve as a reinterpretation of the history of the African race, was intended to be "a general rebellion against the subtle message from even the most 'liberal' white authors (and their Negro disciples): 'You belong to a race of nobodies. You have no worthwhile history to point to with pride.'" The book was written at a time when many black students, educators, and scholars were starting to piece together the connection between the way their history was taught and the way they were perceived by others and by themselves. They began to question assumptions made about their history and took it upon themselves to create a new body of historical research. The book is premised on the question: "If the Blacks were among the very first builders of civilization and their land the birthplace of civilization, what has happened to them that has left them since then, at the bottom of world society, precisely what happened? The Caucasian answer is simple and well-known: The Blacks have always been at the bottom." Williams instead contends that many elementsnature, imperialism, and stolen legacies have aided in the destruction of the black civilization.  description from Sacred Fire

Nervous

by Zane

ISBN: 0743476239
Format: Hardcover, 304pp
Pub. Date: September 2003
Publisher: Simon & Schuster Adult Publishing Group

Zane's legion of fans can't get enough of her way of telling a juicy, sexy story. Now, the New York Times best-selling queen of erotica brings us a tale of a woman with a split personality -- one highly sexed and one sexually repressed.

Jonquinette Pierce has always been nervous when it comes to men. She took a job dealing with mostly women so she could avoid men. She goes to work and comes straight home during the week, but on the weekends her other self, Jude, takes over and goes on intense sexual escapades.

Jonquinette recognizes that her alter ego is a problem and seeks to resolve it with the help of Dr. Marcella Spencer, the psychiatrist Zane originated in her best-selling novel Addicted. Jude's response is to get angry and go on a sexual rampage. In the meantime, Jonquinette becomes interested in her new neighbor, Mason, after having a conversation with him at a mutual friend's wedding. Jude has no intention of letting Jonquinette fall in love and find happiness at her expense. Jude is having way too much fun using the body she shares with Jonquinette. This "two faces of Eve" scenario is a fun fantasy for women who have imagined their own alter ego behaving badly in a sexual way. But for the leading lady of Nervous, this is a nightmare. Based on a short story of the same title from her best-selling collection, The Sex Chronicles, Nervous is classic Zane with an edge. So, relax, sit back. You're in for a nerve-tingling read.

Pimp: The Story of My Life
Click to order via
Amazon

by Iceberg Slim

ISBN: 0870679791
Format: Mass Market Paperback, 317pp
Pub. Date: April 1997
Publisher: Holloway House Publishing Company

Pimp: The Story Of My Life is brutally honest and it seems to wallow on the dark, ugly side of human nature. It's definitely not for the weak-stomach, illusion-preferred-having people. This is about the other side of reality that many of us, by the Grace Of God, will only encounter in a book, such as Pimp.

Pimp covers the life of Iceberg Slim, from his early childhood to his first stint in prison to his rise and fall as a pimp. Simp opens the door and a window to the seedy side of town. He goes into details of how to "turn" a woman to become a prostitute, his relationship to the women in his "stable", rules in the unwritten book of pimping, and even gives a brief history of the black pimp. But, the most dangerous is his insight into human nature. It's not pretty, not by any stretch of the imagination.

I was captivated. I felt like a kid reading Hustler in the middle of the night, under the covers with a flashlight. For it seemed that I was reading and learning things that I shouldn't. Let's face, it disturb the devil out of me.

The only element about the narrative of the book is the fact that Slim used slang throughout it. Normally, I wouldn't mind it, but you must realize that the slang he used are words that was used almost 60 years ago. Yep, a history lesson unto itself. Eventually, I caught on, but it took a while.

by Shannon Holmes

ISBN: 074348620X
Format: Paperback, 224pp
Pub. Date: October 2003
Publisher: Atria Books

The best-selling author of B-More Careful, Shannon Holmes, delivers Bad Girlz, another wild adventure into the streets. The setting this time is the Badlands, one of the toughest and poorest communities in Philadelphia.

Bad Girlz takes you into the mysterious and often dangerous lives of young women who turn to the streets and strip clubs as a means of survival. These are girls who, along the way, suffer bad breaks and find themselves ripe for exploitation by men and women who pretend to be their saviors.

Tender and Goldie were taken under wing by Kat, a veteran stripper, who enjoyed the life and the risks she had to take to stay in the mix of the sex trade. Both of these young and beautiful girls had ended up in dire straits and in need of Kat's help in different ways, but ultimately for the same reasons: They lacked the love and support that most of us expect to get at home and in our communities. Where they live, illegal money is often the only money to be made, and the difference between the law and the outlaw is tough to discern.

From Jim Crow to Civil Rights: The Supreme Court and the Struggle for Racial Equality

by Michael J. Klarman

ISBN: 0195129032
Format: Hardcover, 655pp
Pub. Date: December 2003
Publisher: Oxford University Press

Fifty years after the Supreme Court's decision in Brown v. Board of Education, the debate still rages over the consequences of this momentous ruling. In this authoritative account of constitutional law concerning race, Michael Klarman details, in the richest and most thorough discussion to date, how and whether Supreme Court decisions do, in fact, matter. When Thurgood Marshall stood in front of the Warren Court to argue the case that statutes segregating public schools should be invalidated, profound changes had already occurred in American race relations. For the justices, Brown posed a conflict between law and politics. Traditional sources of constitutional interpretation -- text, original intent, precedent, and custom -- seemed to indicate that school segregation was permissible. But most of the justices found that practice deeply abhorrent. In creating new precedent in Brown, the judges relied on their personal values, values heavily influenced by larger historical forces.

The consequences of the Brown decision are similarly difficult to disentangle from the social and political context of the time. Brown unquestionably had a significant impact -- it brought race issues to public attention and mobilized supporters of the ruling. It also, however, energized the opposition. In a highly provocative interpretation of the decision's connection to the civil rights movement, Klarman argues that Brown was more important for mobilizing southern white opposition to racial change than for encouraging directaction protest. By mandating court-ordered school desegregation, Brown created the occasion for violent confrontation and radicalized southern politics, leading to the election of politicians who calculated that violent suppression of civil rights demonstrations would win votes. It was such violence, vividly captured on television, that Klarman argues ultimately transformed northern opinion on race -- a backlash that led to the enactment of landmark civil rights legislation in the mid-1960s. A monumental investigation of the Supreme Court's rulings on race, From Jim Crow to Civil Rights spells out in compelling detail the political and social context within which the Supreme Court justices operate and the consequences of their decisions for American race relations.

by Joel Augustus Rogers

ISBN: 0960229469
Format: Hardcover, 272pp
Pub. Date: January 1989
Publisher: Helga Rogers

"Africa's Gift to America is another classic which should be added to the library of every serious student of African American history. He lays out in clear and fascinating detail the role of the African American from the founding of the nation in the 17th century through the Revolutionary War period to the Civil War and early Post-Civil War era. His use of first hand documents such as newspapers, magazines, political cartoons, journals, and his extensive citation to then-contemporary historical works is masterfully woven to create a rich historical tapestry. His mentioning of obscure historical facts such as the Corwin Amendment, the rejected original form of the 13th Amendment that would have preserved rather than abolished slavery, as well as the role of slave Jo Anderson in creating the McCormick reaper, are but a small sampling of the treasures within this invaluable volume."
