Angeli R. Rasbury is a
writer and an attorney. She was reviews editor of Black Issues Book Review,
associate editor of QBR: The Black Book Review, editor of The Bushwick Observer,
managing editor of African Voices, and associate editor of Black Elegance and
Belle magazines. She has written for Essence, Black Elegance, Belle, Black
Issues Book Review, QBR: The Black Book Review, Accent, The Source, Emerge,
Family Digest, Baby Digest, American Visions and Brooklyn Bridge magazines and
numerous community papers. She is a co-editor of Sacred Fire: The QBR 100
Essential Black Books (John Wiley & Sons, 1999) and a founding editor of Anansi:
Fiction of the African Diaspora. The people Ms. Rasbury has written about
include Myrlie Evers-Williams, painter Lawrence Finney and sports figures Gary
Sheffield. She has interviewed Cynthia Cooper, Toshi Reagon, writers, community
activists, fashion designers, doctors and financial experts.
Ms. Rasbury has organized readings, been a panelist at writing and publishing
conferences, and judged artists' applications for grants. She is a member of the
New Renaissance Writers Guild and was awarded the DorisJean Austin Fellowship
for American American Fiction Writers by the Frederick Douglass Creative Arts
Center in 1995.
Angeli Rasbury appeared on "Today in New York" (January 2000) to
discuss toys, books and games that promote tolerance of racial and ethnic
differences. She holds a B.S. from Syracuse University and a J.D. from Temple
University. She practiced criminal defense law as a senior attorney with the
Legal Aid Society, Criminal Defense Division for more than six years. She has
taught high school students various areas of the law through the Law Education
and Assistance Program. She is the executive director of the Nkiru Center for
Education and Culture. She lives in Brooklyn, New York.
