MahoganyBooks Hosts Books for the Block: A Community Wide Book Drive to Collect Thousands of Books for Area Youth

Woodbridge, VA June 9, 2014—MahoganyBooks announced last week that their Books for the Block book drive campaign will run this year from June 1 through September 1, and benefit youth in the Washington, DC Metropolitan region. In an effort to increase both access to literature and the love of books, residents of Northern Virginia, Maryland and Washington DC are urged to clean off their shelves and donate new and gently used children’s books at various collection sites throughout the area.

Requested book categories are fiction, board books, educational workbooks, biography, science, math, and art-- for ages 0-18. Supporters unable to drop off books at local sites can log on to www.mahoganybooks.com and enter Booksfortheblock as their coupon code at checkout. The ordered books will directly benefit the drive.

Current Drop off Sites in the Northern Virginia/Washington DC Region include:

  • Boys & Girls Club of Greater Washington - Hylton Branch 5070 Dale Blvd., Woodbridge, VA 22913
  • Boys & Girls Club of Greater Washington - Manassas Branch  9501 Dean Park Lane, Manassas, VA 20110
  • WPFW Radio Station: 1819 L Street NW, Washington, DC 2003 (9am-5pm)
  • Bloombars Cultural Arts Center: 3222 11th St. NW, Washington, DC 20010

Beginning August 2, the largest distribution of books will be conducted at the family friendly African American Festival in Manassas, VA where area youth are encouraged to come out and choose their very own book to take home with them. Partners of the 2014 Books for the Block include the Prince William County Public Library (Chinn), WPFW Radio, emPower Magazine.com, Ramunda Young, Inc., Bloombars, Friends of The Chinn Park Regional Library and both Boys & Girls Clubs of Manassas and Hylton in Dale City, VA. Aside from area youth, recipients of the books include the Friends of Chinn Park Regional Library, Prince George’s County Library and the Boys & Girls Club.
