Since its founding in 1990, Milligan Books has skyrocketed to become the fastest-growing Black female-owned publishing company in America. The company has published more than 100 Black authors. Several of their works have made various bestseller lists.
"There are many talented and dedicated Black writers," says Dr. Rosie Milligan, founder and owner of Milligan Books, "who have written well-crafted works that deserve publication." Dr. Milligan emphasizes that she is not in competition with the mainstream publishers, many of whom she feels publish excellent works. Her mission simply is to offer authors another opportunity to reach an audience with their work.
In fact, Dr. Milligan feels that self-publishing is not for everyone, nor is mainstream publishing suited for everyone. Milligan's philosophy is to help the author achieve their dreams. She prepares authors to succeed with self-publishing and she prepares authors who want to pursuer mainstream.
Milligan is considered a marketing "Guru." Her books, as well as her author's books, dominate sales on the Internet. Milligan Books' authors are requested guests on national radio and talk shows.

As an African-American author/speaker, and owner of a small publishing house
in Los Angeles, I speak from experience. I know the advantages and the
disadvantages of having and not having the knowledge and resources necessary to
become financially successful in the writing and speaking industry.
I completed my first book in 1990, had it copyrighted and began my search into he marketplace. I sold a few books to my family and friends. Then, I thought, "Where do I go from here?" I was asked to conduct a seminar on "Starting A Business Made Simple" at the Los Angeles Black Business Expo, founded by Barbara Lindsey. I presented a very powerful seminar. I had an exhibit booth space, and I conducted a book signing in my booth. The participants stopped by to chat, offer encouragement, and a few purchased the book.
I conducted the seminar 3:00 pm on Saturday at the Expo. After the seminar, my book sold like hot cakes in the winter and ice cream in the summer. I remember George Subira had his booth next to mine. His books had hard back covers and were priced at $13.95. He looked at my book, which was soft back with spiral binding, and said, "You're asking $20.00 for this book? My books are hard backs and I'm only asking $13.95." I said to Mr. Subira, "I guess that is what you think your books are worth." However, I thought to myself, Did I overprice my book? At that moment, I heard the voice of my father, Simon, as a whisper in my ear saying, "Pay him no attention, and remember, find a need and fill it." My father was referring to supply and demand. There was a demand for books on How to Start a Business Made Simple, and there were very few books written at the grassroots level. I had a product that people needed, wanted and were willing to pay for.
I conducted the "Starting a Business Made Simple" workshop at the Expo on Saturday and Sunday. Following each seminar, participants were reaching over each other for fear that I might run out of books. I learned the tricks of the trade from my father Simon, the greatest farmer of all times. I had a watermelon business at the age of 10. Simon taught me to put out a few at a time.
When the expo was over, the excitement of selling books was over, because I did not know where to go from there. I ran ads in local newspapers. This was a big mistake, a waste of money because I did not place the ad as a mail order. When people hear or read about a book, they usually go to the nearest bookstore to purchase the book. My book was not in the bookstores. Bookstores usually purchase their books from book distributors. I did not have any clue as to where to find a book distributor, therefore, I continued to speak and sell books at the Los Angeles Black Business Expo.
I learned the hard way how to do it right, I wrote this book so that you may learn the easy way and do it right the first time.
