E. J. Josey (January 20, 1924 – July 3, 2009) was the Professor Emeritus, Department of Library and Information Science, School of Information Sciences, University of Pittsburgh, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He was honored with awards and honorary degrees from institutions worldwide, including the Lippincott Award, the Equality Award, and the John Ames Humphry/OCLC Forest Press Award for Distinguished Service to International Relations and Librarianship by the ALA International Relations Committee.
He was president of the American Library Association, and was a life member of that organization.
Josey was also the founder of the Black Caucus of the American Library Association (BCALA). Each year, since 1994, the BCALA presents the Black Caucus American Library Association Literary Award to acknowledge outstanding works of fiction and nonfiction for adult audiences by African American authors.
“Much to my chagrin, the Mississippi Library Association was honored there for its National Library Week Activities. I exploded! I was seething with anger, for I remembered that three civil rights workers-Andrew Goodman, James Chaney, and Micheal Schwerner had been murdered and lay dead and buried somewhere in Mississippi, their bodies not yet discovered. I also remembered that the Mississippi Library Association had withdrawn from ALA rather than give membership to Negro Librarians.’ E. J. Josey, The Black Librarian in America
