Harold A. Dow
Biography of Harold A. Dow
Harold A. Dow is the co-founder of the dynamic entrepreneurial duo, The Dow Twins. Born in Queens, New York, Norman and Harold began their long career as event specialists and entrepreneurs while attaining their B.S. at St. John’s University. They established themselves as a smart management team in the ’70s, orchestrating social events at Othello’s and Leviticus, celebrated New York nightspots. Justine’s (formerly Othello’s) became home to the Dow Twins as well as the ‘flagship’ of a golden era in Black nightlife in the tri-state area. The club blossomed into a social/business-networking hub, a place to socialize, dance, and meet new friends as well as business associates.
Perhaps one of the most celebrated and broadly attended special events and benefits created by the Twins was the annual fête aboard the aircraft carrier, USS Intrepid Air • Sea • Space Museum docked in New York City. After 25 consecutive years (1985–2010), the audience continued to surpass the record attendance from the previous year. Consistently meeting standards of quality, this project established precedence for and commanded a higher level of business support and participation.
Forty-three years of “social engineering” by The Dow Twins’ Group has brought hundreds of thousands of “folk” affably together in social venues well-known for being some of the best places to “meet and greet” in New York City and other major cities. The Dow Twins, with a kind of prosperity that is invaluable, cannot be measured by ordinary means. Indisputably, some of their greatest strengths are resilience and the ability to establish standards, set goals, overcome obstacles, and meet challenges with a clear focus and commitment to success. The Twins have woven together an impressive network of friends and associates among the most active, appealing, intriguing, and successful Black and Latino professionals. More recently, however, this picture has expanded into a more global representation of metropolitan New Yorkers.
Norman Dow’s untimely passing in 2005 left a major hole in the hearts of hundreds of thousands of folks around the world. His younger brother and twin, Harold, forges forward growing their brand.
Ever mindful of their commitment to “give back” to the community, the Twins participate in fundraisers for many worthy causes. Their expertise has earned them well-deserved respect as consultants to such organizations as the New York Urban League, The Minisink Boys, The Urban Network, The College Fund/UNCF, The Dave Winfield Foundation, The Negro Ensemble Co, Men Who Cook, Pathways for Youth, The Dance Theatre of Harlem, The USS Intrepid Foundation, The Jackie Robinson Foundation, South Africa Mandela Project, Hurricane Katrina Relief Fundraiser, and St. John’s University Alumni Association.
In recognition of their customers, The Reginald N. Dow Memorial Scholarship has been awarded to students of their patrons and others, three annually, in memory of their father.
