Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. (January 15, 1929 – April 4, 1968), Nobel Peace Prize laureate and architect of the nonviolent civil rights movement, was among the twentieth century’s most influential figures. One of the greatest orators in U.S. history, King is the author of several books, including Stride Toward Freedom: The Montgomery Story. His speeches, sermons, and writings are inspirational and timeless. He married Coretta Scott on June 18, 1953. They remained married until his assassination in 1968.
King founded the Southern Christian Leadership Conference and effectively promoted the cause of equal rights through nonviolent demonstration. Some 200,000 people joined him in the "March on Washington" in 1963. He was the youngest person ever to receive the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964.
The civil rights activist was the architect of the nonviolent civil rights movement, and was among the twentieth century’s most influential figures. One of the greatest orators in U.S. history, King also authored several books, including Stride Toward Freedom: The Montgomery Story, Where Do We Go from Here: Chaos or Community?, and Why We Can’t Wait. His speeches, sermons, and writings are inspirational and timeless. King was assassinated in Memphis, Tennessee, on April 4, 1968.
King was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom and the Congressional Gold Medal. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day was established as a U.S. federal holiday in 1986. Hundreds of streets in the U.S. have been renamed in his honor. A memorial statue on the National Mall was opened to the public in 2011.
