A Sacramento Educator reviewed
"iN tHE cAR" and stated:
"Over the years, DeWitt and his family experienced many of the hardships
common to African Americans in the United States, especially racism, both implied and
explicit. As well, DeWitt's tale fits in with that which many Americans of all races and
ethnicities are able to recount about post-World War II America-- economic and social
advancement in an era of relative prosperity. The latter phenomena, however, is the
subtext of DeWitt's greater purpose--telling the story of what he sees as the sickness and
ineptitude of the CDC [California Department of Corrections]--perhaps the fastest growing
bureaucracy in California. Despite Mr. DeWitt's unapologetic (and seemingly
justified) personal statements against the CDC, iN tHE cAR will serve as an important
organizational history. Moreover, as a Californian and as a local resident, Mr. DeWitt has
produced a viable and passionate piece of local and regional history. Of course, iN tHE
cAR will serve as an excellent source for students of African American history. Not only
does Mr. DeWitt use autobiography to tell a larger story--part of an African American
literary tradition--but he deals with an institution that disproportionately touches
African American lives."
Copies of "iN tHE cAR" have now been ordered by the
Sacramento Library system.
Arlene Gause-Jackson, Author of "Howling Against the
Wind," reviewed "iN tHE cAR" and stated:
"Lonnie's new book entitled, "iN tHE cAR," is a tool for mind awareness. It
was a vehicle, which opened my eyes to the many injustices that occur in this world that
we live. Our justice system, as author Lonnie F. DeWitt pointed out in "iN tHE
cAR," falls short of the meaning of the word (justice). As I took time to read the
book, I was confronted with anger, confusion, bitterness, and frustration. Feelings penned
by the author, and feelings the author evoked inside of me. "iN tHE cAR" is a
must read for "all Americans" regardless of nationality who are concerned about
real freedom. I look forward to reading your next project!"
