s even an idea\n5:29\nwe look back to nurses nalbandian composer and condu
ctor of armenian heritage\n5:35\nhis family fled the genocide in turkey ar
ound 1915 and settled in ethiopia where his uncle kurvok nalbandian became
\n5:42\na renowned musician nurses took over the mantle of head of nationa
l opera and his uncle retired and\n5:48\nemperor haile selassie tasked him
with composing music for the national theatre\n5:54\nnurses wanted to tak
e local music to the stage with a big band sound without losing its authen
ticity\n5:59\nit was solving this problem way back in the 1950s that laid
the groundwork for what was to come\n6:06\n[Music]\n6:19\nso now we move o
n to ethio jazz proper what better place to start than the father of the s
ound mulatto estate\n6:26\nborn in 1943 in jimmer he took up studies in wa
les of all places where he discovered a passion for music and the\n6:32\na
rts he then went on to study classical music at trinity college london wor
king with the best and brightest of the uk jazz\n6:38\nscene at the time h
e wanted to promote and share ethiopian music though whilst also delving d
eeper\n6:44\ninto this newly discovered jazz music he eventually moved to
america and went to the berkeley college of music in\n6:50\nboston where h
e forged the blueprint for the ethio jazz sound merging western 12-note ha
rmonies and instrumentation\n6:57\nwith the traditional ethiopian pentaton
ic scales [Music]\n7:05\nin the 1960s he moves again this time to new york
and this is where ethio jazz was really born\n7:11\nestablishing an ethio
pian quartet and recording three albums the first two more of a latin infu
sed\n7:17\naffair but 1972's mulatto of ethiopia gave birth to the sound w
e now know and\n7:22\nlove let's take a listen to chiffada taken from the
milata of ethiopia lp\n7:27\na track where you can very much still hear th

Music]\n13:58\nnot too much later mulatto decided to return to addis ababa
and brought with him this new genre of music but was met\n14:04\nwith res
istance one of only two african nations never to have suffered colonisatio
n the people of\n14:10\nethiopia were suspicious of any form of cultural c
ontamination and as such weren't sure about step k's\n14:16\nbrand of west
ernized ethiopian music but with enough determination and insistence on th
e virtuoso's part the nation soon\n14:23\ncame to accept it with open arms
a new sound for a modern ethiopia\n14:28\nyakatit ethio jazz was his firs
t album recorded in addis and features an incredible collection of musicia
ns\n14:34\nfercado amde mezcal and mogus hate on saxophone rhodesian born
andrew wilson and fellow\n14:40\nethiopian giovanni rico on guitar tamare
harigu on drums and johannes te kola on\n14:47\ntrumpet te kola would go o

o let's now take a moment to discuss mahmoud ahmed one of the first singer
s to embrace this new western sound brought by mulatto to\n22:23\nethiopia
the release of his ear melamela album is a landmark in the genre\n22:28\n
featuring the previously mentioned mezcal enrico as members of ibex band m
ahmoud's voice rings out with a\n22:34\nspiritual fervor sometimes deep an
d hypnotic and at times soaring and empowering\n22:39\nhe's my personal fa
vorite artist from the genre so i'm going to take this opportunity to play
a couple of tracks back-to-back to begin to demonstrate the\n22:46\ndiver
sity of his performances first up from his 1973 self-titled lp\n22:52\ncol

9\n[Music]\n31:58\n[Music]\n32:05\nso we're next going to take a look at a
nother infamous ethiopian singer alamel\n32:11\nknown by many as the ethio
pian james brown but also linked to elvis and sinatra though i personally
find these\n32:16\ncomparisons a bit more tenuous eshete was a huge part o

an music also known as the bell epoch which began in the late 1960s ended
all of a sudden\n37:02\nin 1974 with the arrival of the durg the marxist r
egime of mengistu\n37:10\nlike many other marxist and communist regimes su
ppression of western and liberal ideas was a mainstay\n37:16\nincluding un
fortunately ethio jazz many musicians fled the country or simply stopped p

eant the communist regime in ethiopia lost their biggest supporter\n37:29\
nand was soon overthrown a democracy was installed and the revival of ethi
opian music started in\n37:34\n1991. i'm now going to play one of my favor
ite pieces of ethiopian music for you by an artist known as a gutter made\

t of the show haile murguia his way around censorship by the derg dictator
ship was to produce instrumental\n41:44\nworks as it tended to be lyrics t
hat drew the attention of the government to the music however during a tou

d to stay in america effectively\n41:55\nending the band for good hailu st
ill wrote and recorded some music in the years to follow but was effective

by the awesome tapes from africa record label reissues\n42:06\nof his work
s have now seen him step back into his role as a musician and he tours the
world again playing to a new\n42:12\ngeneration of fans i had the pleasur
