  2. @Troy said something in another thread that I found to be somewhat interesting: While I don't disagree with this statement and find it to be quite accurate in many cases, my question is what is meant by "lucky" or "luck"? What exactly IS "luck"? Is it strictly when chances randomly fall in one's favor; or are there Forces and Entities in the background controlling one's fortune and giving one "good luck"?

  4. @Edwina Louise DorchSomething else comes to mind in reference to the book you shared, and the question that was asked. 'The book asks the question - Who do you love? or What is the color of the person that you love? First, I chose to start another topic because I didn't want to interfere with the purpose of your entry, but the question of Love, provoked an observation about Four Letter Words, so thank you for igniting my thoughts. Some four-letter words have lost their power, while other four-letter words have gained strength. Take the four-letter word LOVE, for example, the word love used to have a powerful emotional connection to the mind, body and spirit. It made you tingle. Now the four-letter word has branched out to mean many things. For example, love ya is another way of saying, bye, and thanks for doin me a solid, and oops, sorry... On the other hand, the four-letter word HATE hasn't lost its power, and, in fact, has gained momentum. Even though the four-letter word has branched out to mean many things, its power has remained constant, in that it continues to be associated with a negative connotation. How about the word FEAR. This word and meaning remained consistent in that it keeps one from taking action whether good or bad. What four-letter words cause an emotional reaction for you and why?

  5. I believe our sista was going down to Mexico to get some butt work done. It's a cheaper surgery down there. I'm wondering what kind of work the sista does that requires having a different azz tho. I'm thinking it would have been even cheaper for her to spend time in gym to tone and tighten up. Unless her job is to make that azz clap at the Snooty Fox lounge. She looks a bit too old for that line of work.

  6. Chev Buck and the Preacher times?????? Gurl are you seriously????? LMBAO! Sometimes I wish I could transport myself back into the Reconstruction Era from say 1870-1910 because things were so promising for AfroAmericans. No gangs. No crack No AIDS There was a clear distinction between the racist Whites who wanted to harm you and the decent ones who wanted to help....so there was less confusion. And ofcourse we as a people were more united and our families, values, and morals were far more intact. Lee Vining I live in Michigan and every winter we get atleast a few days of cold that is so harsh and frigid it makes me wonder what the FIRST people who settled this state were thinking when they came here...lol. I don't even stay in Northern Michigan but in Southern....and it still get's 10 and 20 degrees below zero from time to time! Makes you wonder what the hell were those people trying to escape from that was so terrible that they'd rather put up with THIS cold and snow than go back.....LOL And this was before space heaters and furnaces where you had to rely on wool, animal skins, and old fashioned fires to stay warm! What in the world DROVE those people and motivated them to do what they did....man.

  7. Okay, @richardmurray, I may not have read with clear understanding and also, I read the article a few days before I posted so, I may need to go back and read it again. Anyway, I thought the creator of this theme was the author of Beloved? So on that assumption, I thought this was to be an ethnic theme whereby the young girl was given 'a doll' that, in her mind replaced her mother, since the new 'mother' was absent. Therefore, I was thinking that the doll should be more like 'an ethnic image' of the girl and the culture. And yes, if I had creative control, I think it would be kind of intriguing to have a sort of 'Cruella Deville' Diva like ethnic doll character and build her to where, she could evoke a kind of 'love-hate' emotion from the readers! LOL! And then if it went to film, actresses like Jaque' or Jasmine Guy could probably really bring life to that kind of character.

  8. Yes, @Pioneer1 This story got me down! I read about it a few days ago. What a horror. What in the world can be done so that this kind of 'mistaken identity' can be avoided for tourist wanting to come and buy and sell, so-to-speak, in Mexico. I mean, if Mexico wants to have some type of dealings with America, this sort of thing should be completely prevented. I feel so sorry for those people.

  9. Actually "luck" is just a word. Waking up every day could be considered lucky, - or unlucky depending on your environment. Luck is Life.

  10. A distinction should be made between urban blacks and rural blacks. My father, pictured below. pretty much typified black men who made up the first wave of the Great Migration north. Arriving in Chicago in 1914, he found work as a waiter in one of Chicago's exclusive hotels, so his work clothes were a tuxedo and bow tie, not the overalls of rural blacks. His lifestyle as far as attire and grooming went, wasn't drastically different from todays regimen. Away from his job when he was out and about socializing, he dressed in the style of the day whether he was wealthy or not. Later, when he was employed as a railroad Pullman porter, his work garb was a neatly tailoredly uniform, and he was just a common laborer. Our black experiences vary . . circa 1916

  11. @Chevdove If you were in the creative control situation, you would had said for the doll to be non white european looking?

  12. @Pioneer1 I do know that individual luck is not collective|communal luck. The luck that separated Jesse JAckson from Barack Obama is not the luck that separated Asanteman/the ashanti land from Ethiopia. Collections of people always have or have not opportunity simultaneously. As well as a mix of preparation or no preparation. The individual elements don't solely apply to collectives. TO be blunt, collectives have the factor of collective choices. Solomon Northrop being freed from enslavement you can say is opportunity plus preparedness though we all know not all free blacks who were exactly in Solomon Northrops shoes received the same fate. So... but, the luck of the black community in the usa has more factors that for solomon northup.

  13. Chev What you said reminds me of a quote from President Obama: "Luck is when Opportunity meets Preparedness" But I also wonder if there is some external Forces that generate luck and providing the opportunities besides mere chance. Some people carry good luck charms and amulets and swear they bring them good luck, so this is clearly beyond merely "chance". Clearly they believe there is some Force or Power generated or influenced by these charms they carry. richardmurray I can provide my answers but I will not. I'm sorry but I'm going to have to INSIST that you provide me with some of your answers, lol. Your answers may possibly be THEE answers! The light of truth is too important for us to hide it under a bushel.

  14. Must have been off the scale brutal. This before power tools, municipal water, electricity and comforts. Just a frozen stretch of land and your hands to work with,,, but freedom! When I visit the Civil War country in the relentless summer heat and humidity I think there are no words written to describe the horrors of slavery. Just a tiny bit I remember. Probably because I'm a movie fan. Amazing how the camera loves some actors. Daughter did write how tough it was settling in Colorado at the turn of the century. Daughter now teaches math at a University. Gave up the fat studio paychecks for a teachers salary. Maybe that's on me and my advice to her: "Do what you want, what you like, but get your education." Teaching is in her blood.

  15. Yes, this does seem like an intriguing plot! I think that if this is anything like that Chuckie doll, it will be a great suspense thriller. I wonder why though, she made the doll look White and not ethnic?

  16. Oh Wow! Very interesting. I love to hear about these 'Buck & the Preacher' times! Not much history available of this very important part of America about Black African-typed people in the western parts of America before or after Columbus. In the western era, towns were built and then became ghost towns and the stories of Blacks are gone with these towns for now, but hopefully, they will be revived. I've heard of Black people in Phoenix, Arizona, Colorado, Arizona, California... long before Columbus. Where are these stories written down and archived?

  17. For me, 'luck' means 'OPPORTUNITY' If a person is given the opportunity to achieve then they may be able to if they have the other two components mentioned above. But in many cases, without opportunity, a person may have the drive and the desire but not he CHANCE--another word for luck. In America, that is how I view this DEMOCRACY. Some have and some do not. Some are given the opportunity while others are not. An Opportunity can come from how this government has set up to give certain people a chance to be successful and, another type of opportunity can be from a supernatural source. And then there are other types of opportunities that can come about. But imo, nothing can really be achieved without some type of opportunity.
