  1. The photo history of Lena Horne was beautiful. She aged so gracefully Both versions of these versions were great. I'll have to listen a few more times to each to pick a favorite (not sure why I feel compelled to pick a favorite -- just the way my brain works I guess). Still hard to believe this tune is almost 90 years old. When it debuted the only way you would likely here it is was when it was performed live or if you caught it on the radio. The idea that we can call up so many different version of this song, play it on demand, share it with others, download to portable devices -- without paying for it is mind boggling. Often people draw analogies between where music has gone with digital files and where books are going with eBooks as if they were analogous. Few have really considered a world where books are shared as freely as music files are today -- even if they talk about it as if it inevitable. But that is a different conversation. Here is Frank
  2. While looking for the video I see that Amy Winehouse did a version as well. Collectively her renditions have gotten FAR more views than Ella's. I prefer Ella's rendition much more -- it is just firing on all cylinders. I did know Jazz musicians played these melodies. Actually it was you mentioning your husband affinity for Jazz that prompted me to post Ella's song. Winehouse's version is fine but it does not move me at all. I'm literally enthralled by Ella's version. I can't explain why perhaps someone who understand the mechanics of music more can explain why. I heard a singer perform this song at the Apollo during a $10 variety show (Jazz Shrines tremendous entertainment value). It was perhaps the single best performance of anything I've seen at the Apollo. It blew away Winehouse version but not as good as Ella's. The sing is still being performed and quite relevant. But Pop music appeals to the masses and will garner the lion's share of the marketing resources. So I can't imagine Bad 25 being much more than an extended music video of one of Michael's weakest, albeit better selling, songs. I don't plan to tune in. It is interesting to think how much stuff I share that I personally don't care very much about -- or dislike even.
  3. Jay's ownership is minuscule he is more a figurehead than a decision maker, and I don't know about Jordan's ownership percentage (but you can look it up). Even if they owned the teams 100% I doubt the problems I pointed out and many more I did not raise would change. I have one kid at Syracuse and another at William & Mary. Both schools have football teams. I attended games at both schools. $100 for a decent ticket at an SU game $20 for a great seat at a Williams & Mary game. SU's aging stadium seats almost 50K people while W&M seats just over 12K (though it does not look that big). At William & Mary the kids attend the games for free and get freebies. At SU the kids are targeted just like any other mark in the general public, expensive beers, apparel. SU's Athletic facilities rivals anyone's -- professional or otherwise. It was really after comparing and contrasting the two types of programs that I realized schools do not have to spend a boat load of money to have a enjoyable program. The goal is not to turn the students in rabid sports fanatics (read: ticket buyers). I suggest we start by drastically reducing college's expenditures on athletics. Let pro football pay for their own farm teams, stadiums without the subsidy from our universities and tax payers. I could go on actually that reminds me Check out this debate on whether college football should be banned altogether. after hearing the arguments for and against Cynique (anyone) let me know what you think: http://fora.tv/2012/05/08/Ban_College_Football "Corruption and a growing concern for head injury have put college football in the spotlight. Are football programs’ millions in profits exploitation? Or are they still a celebration of amateur sport? Does football’s inherent danger and violence have any place in institutions of higher learning? Or does it provide young men with educational opportunities they would not otherwise have?" I listen to these Intelligence Squared debates on a variety of subjects via podcast. I even attended one in person -- it is good stuff Below is a clip which summarizes some of the arguments of the full debate
  4. I hope you last long enough to see how it end too Cynique. This is reality TV. What is most astonishing is how caught up people are for the chosen side -- it is the same frenzy you see at a football game. The "debates" are even analyzed the way a prize fight would be -- issues are irrelevant. If Barack loses (which I still think there is a very good chance he will) Black people will react as if the issue is just about race and therefore any action will be misdirected and ineffective. If things stay the same or get worse under a Romney administration. I think the entire country may be primed to do something effective to bring about real change. If Barack wins and things stay the same or get worse. Black people will remain ineffective and a Republican will be swept into office easily in 2016. If things get better under either scenario -- Great!
  5. Y'all are bad I ain't even gonna play with poking fun a two person ( guess it is really two people huh)... I have to say until I searched for this video that I had no clue there were someone alive with two heads! TWO HEADS!?! This is astonishing! I would stop and watch this if I were channel surfing. The program seems to be done without treating them (they really are to people) like a freak show. In fact the apparent normalcy of their lives is almost bizarre. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BkKWApOAG2g This seems to be the full program season 1 episode 3. Now I have zero interest in this show after watch the first few minutes. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D0z7OPvs4Lg

  8. Hey Milton, I'd appreciate if you would drop me troy@aalbc.com the name of the event and what happened (or share you experience here). Another problem we have is that many of us are forced to learn the hard way. That is we in order to avoid airing dirty laundry or coming across as "haters", we don't talk about bad experiences that we've had, as a result others get burned more easily. We could use a Black Book Better Business Bureau (BBBBB or B5) or something.
  9. Wow it only took you 11 minutes of thought Writergirl :-) I feel everything you are saying but I still have a problem with the analogy. Again, a gun's sole purpose is to 'cause harm -- even when hunting. Religion, unlike the gun is used for both good and evil. I think the world would be a much better place without guns. I think the world would be a better place if religious practice were more spiritual.
  10. Well I finished the book. Funny I picked up the paperback of Wilkerson's tome "The Warmth of other Suns" to read next, from a local independent bookstore, and it must be 10 times as long -- easily -- and it still cost less than Morrison's pamphlet. I know, I know, I'm too fixated on the price of Morrison's circular -- I'm just saying it was too short to be called a "novel". I thought the book was well written. There was no "plot". I thought it was an interesting insight into Frank Money's motivations and experiences. I like Morrison's writing style her ability to conjure images is slightly reminiscent of Jean Tomer. While I enjoyed the book I would not rave over it. It was simply to short compared to everything else that is available to read. But that can also be an advantage. If you are someone, who does not have a lot of time to read, and you want to sample Morrison, you can easily get through "Home" in a few hours. I read 1/2 of it in a sports bar, over fried pickles and beer, and finished it off before going to bed a few nights later. Cynique can you go more into the Zoot suited character? I don't think i really "got" him. I understand wearing the Zoot suit was a "declaration of freedom and self-determination, even rebelliousness". Maybe the Zoot suited apparition signifying his approval by the end of the story represented Cee and Franks freedom or the beginning of it. Also what do you think was the significance of reburying the killed father?
  11. Wimbey’s Corner by David Covin http://aalbc.it/wimbey AALBC.com book reviewer, Emanuel Carpenter says "Loved the book. Read 400 pages in two days." Read the AALBC.com Book Review
  12. Here is another comment from a popular author: Tayari Jones [http://aalbc.com/authors/tayarijones.htm] commented on your link: "It was hard to respond to the link because there were no examples given. I mean, don't you think it would have been helpful to define the term "literary fiction". And even some evidence of this "languishing." So, how to respond? I mean, Colson Whitehead [http://aalbc.com/authors/colsonwhitehead.htm] is languishing all the way to the bank." There were also a bunch of responses to this on AALBC.com's facebook fan page: http://runt.it/aalbcfb Seems people are interested and will read the posts here, but prefer to comment on Facebook. This is interesting....
  13. Chris Hayden another author named Chris posted the following on my facebook page. (I used the facebook icon to share it on my facebook page. I've done this with a few conversation from this board snce the upgrade, but folks post responses on facebook...) Christopher Alan Chambers [http://aalbc.com/authors/christopher_chambers.htm] "Very good piece. I've found that Lit. fiction written by folk who started in (or pass back and forth b/w) genre fiction is much better b/c the training is on characters, storytelling and not abstract code. hahaha it. BUT let's be frank. An...other reason is (1) major publishers won't buy it unless it is weird and is written in code and (2), strangely related, clearly black folks don't want to read it. Most folk are NOT Yale or Stanford alumni or poets, so some stuff isn't going to be the cup of tea for a community college gradwho's a single mom trying to read something simple and steamy on the No. 45 bus. I'm not being facetious--I'm being objective. Now, should people be more aspirational? Sure. But that's something that's evident in majority society too. It's just that there's more white folks than black folks in this country, and more opportunities for them to have access to literature, and higher proportion of them who enjoy lit. fiction. Ironically, doesn't it seem they support black lit. fiction more than most black readers?"
  14. Whoops did not mean to post under my admin ID -- I almost never did that on the old boards. That last post was made by Troy
  15. Yes Welcome Back Cynique. Hopefully Chris cross over too. A buddy of mine Relative young Black man, went to a date with a supposed "sista" turned out to be an old Chinesse woman -- seriously! Said she was lonely, "and just wanted someone to take her out". My man took it quite well and had dinner with the woman. i think he did more than that but just ain't admitting anything...
  16. Check out the top posters from the last discussion board." The top three posters would definitely be in "my five".
  17. My God this is so tragic. Death toll is based upon destruction there is no firm figures yet. My prayer to the the victims and their families.
