  1. Wow, seems like all the romance readers have flown the coop.

    Oh well, I would encourage people to pick up a romance novel every now and then. A community can't prosper when the people don't love, worship and adore each other. We spend so much time reading and watching negative things, can't we spend a little on things that will remind us of the importance of romance and love? I'm just saying... :)

    All the best,

    Ava Bleu

    Actually your not going to get the response your looking for here so I'll speak for some of the women in the 6 book clubs Im a member of and tell you that AA romance readers are out there and ready for new work.

  2. LiLI, this is not a dating service. Sucking up will get you nowhere. You should try prayer and let me do my thang. Did you read the topic? The man didn't come here to sell you a book, DAMN. Did you have a question, or was your sole purpose rooted in starting mess? Huh, what's really in your wallet. Thumper said "Actually, the cover was the trigger that made me pick up the book". Do you have anything to add to the conversation?

    Haters, ya gotta love'em. *smooche* <_<

    SHAT UP DAMN :angry::blink:;)B)

    Before the Ghetto: Black Detroit in the Nineteenth Century, by David Katzman.

    Antebellum Detroit had a feisty black community that fought the slave-catchers -- literally. When Ruth and Thornton Blackburn were arrested in 1833, female friends spirited her out of the jail by switching clothes with her during a visit. The next day, hundreds of black men laid armed seige to the jail and freed Thornton by force when the sheriff tried to put him in a cart to send him back to slavery. The sheriff received a brutal beating and eventually died of his injuries, while the Blackburns got away across the river to Canada.

    The guy above is the author. I didn't find a picture of his bookcover, but thought his beret was pretty jaunty.

    I must find this book !!!

  4. Whoa on the Ralph Ellison and Richard Wright not being part of the Renaissance thing, though. Didn't know that. They were always bunched together with a bunch of other Renaissance folks in lessons so....My old English teacher needs to get fired. <_<

    By the way, I know this isn't a Renaissance book either, but have you ever read The Spook Who Sat By the Door? The movie for it was very good, but the book is a BEAST.

    I have read The Spook Who sat By The Door a dozen times. I also saw the movie back inthe 70's. I was happy it came out on DVD.

  5. The subject involving the names black parents bestow on their children generated quite a debate here, and it wasn’t long before I landed in the midst of it, peripatetic gadabout that I am. I’ve tried to adopt a tolerant approach to life, - one that reflects a "live-and-let-live" attitude, but people who assert, stir up my assertiveness. So, fresh from my literary excursion through a book about the esoteric realm of Masonic symbolism, I cast aside the ethereal veil which had enthralled me, donned my cynical game-face, and jumped into the clash.

    As usual, the subject split out and went off on different tangents. Before long, arguments in favor of made-up names merged with an advocacy for African names, and I neglected to make a distinction when passing judgment. Now, I want to better clarify my position. To me, choosing an African name is about making a statement. Making a name up is simply an uttered inspiration, the latter having less substance than the former. In any case, people are free to make their choices and to attack me in the process of defending these choices, just as I am free to voice my opposition to their rationales. Shakespeare said “what’s in a name? A rose by any other name would smell as sweet.” So be it. Let’s hear it for aroma; forget the drone.

    Incidentally, I have always been interested in etymology and language and sounds, believing that if you repeatedly intone any syllable long enough, it loses its worldly significance and blends into the "atmospheric hum". The word “WHO” is the name I have given to the Omiscient Ubiquity that gives cohesiveness to our existence. So, in retrospect, when it comes to the subject of what names folks decide to give themselves and their children, I suspect that WHO gives a damn... But I don't. WHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

    I feel you mah sistah. Im waiting to see a Navi name from Avatar LOL

  6. :huh:

    Xeon, if we were standing next to each other, I would first ask you, why did you ask the question? Well, because, I think it would have saved a lot of my following reply.

    You are a good writer. I mean, your posts are well written. Therefore, that tells me something about the person. Consequently, I will assume you asked the question with good intentions. Having said that, my reply is long. So please bare with me.

    First, I think it’s important for would-be writers to have a defined purpose.

    YAWNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN :rolleyes::huh:

  7. Actually... my DC Soul-Sister with the misplaced blister, this is my very first time clicking on ths thread. See, Although Thump is a little older than I (close but older) please don't get us confused. Thumper started this thread. I just stopped in to see how normal people act. I mean, the book suggestion were great but I almost feel asleep midway through the dang thang.

    But Yeah, I have to admit that Cynique brings out the worst in me. But I am glad that you also put her in check. But please don't mention her name. This has been a nice civil thread. I might come through here more often. If nothing else, I can pick up a few names of some serious sounding authors and then drop them at a party of important negroes. I might even sell a few beer cans and buy one of the books. Then I'll stick it under my arm when I go to my next NAACP meeting. That's sure to get me a few votes for King POOPAH.

    I'm going to stay away from anything LiLi is reading because... well.

    Anyway, I'm looking at the one book about the West Indian Domestic in Canada. Now, is it me, or. Well, I think I'll pass on that one, and instead read about Blanche. (Yeah, only Thump knows a bout Blanche)

    Now, Thump may be cheap, but he knows a little something about good books. So if he says the old one drop white man is a good read, I'd be inclined to believe him. But Troy, I don't know about him. However, mamma knows best, so his posts are a push.

    Okay my Soul Sister, since you put me in check, I'll try to maintain a sense of sensibility. Dang, I thought my mother lived in Illinios *lol*

    But remember,I didn't start this, Thump did. Blame it on the Naptown Nappy Yappy.

    SHAT UP

  10. Carey, the first thing you want to do I notice, is call someone a name. Tavis is far from being a dummy. With that said, I was sad these two men who both have something to bring to the table, had this "discussion" in public. They should have picked up the phone and had this conversation in PRIVATE. "WE" need to stop giving folks shyet to use against us.
