  1. The true life story of Benjamin Thornton (1849-1900), who was born a slave and escaped to freedom at age 12, is now available on Amazon.com in print and Kindle editions. Ben Thornton came to Indianapolis where in 1876 he was one of five African-Americans who became members of the Indianapolis Police Department. In 1886, he became the first African-American detective in Indiana. He captured over 400 criminals there and throughout the United States. Along with being recognized as one of the best detectives in the country, Thornton sued the city's public school system in 1894 for school segregation and was active in the civil rights movement there. This book details his life and the numerous criminal cases he investigated.
