African-American Political Agenda???

Recommended Posts

For the last 8 years I've heard that President Obama hasn't addressed African-American Issues affecting the black community.  What are the issues facing 21st century Black America? If we were to draft a legislative proposal agenda to present at the state level, what would we demand?

In my opinion the main problems affecting Black America today are massive unemployment and underemployment, living in areas with inferior schools and crumbling infrastructures, lack of access to adequate healthcare, and  high rates of criminality and immorality.

Some of these problems no government entity can solve, only the community coming together can.
But the government can help establish an atmosphere of stability where our basic needs met so that we can rise above base concerns and focus on deeper social issues.

I actually have an agenda laid out in the almost miraculous event that I happen to get the ear of the next President or Governor to present it to.   But because I'm the type of brother who likes to get a lot of attention and credit for his accomplishments....I'll keep much of it to myself, lol.

To be honest, I don't like the idea of having a STATE inside of a nation.
I actually support a PROVINCE type national structure instead of a STATE one because it eliminates a lot of confusion and conflicts of interests as well as lessens the amount of laws and ordinances people have to live under.

But if I had a Governor who was sincere about helping everyone in their state I would present a number of issues to them:

1. We need a statewide jobs program where the GOVERNMENT goes directly past local municipalities and hire people directly, paying them a decent wage for unskilled jobs that help clean up or rebuild the infrastructure regardless of their criminal record.

2. We need a statewide univeral-type healthcare plan that isn't tied to one's employment.

3. We need the state Government to financially standardize and directly oversee the public educational system instead of leaving it up to individual districts, to eliminate gross inequalities in education which is the main fuel for jails and prisons.

Absolutely, in agreement here. There's an article, however, I read on care2care that indicates there maybe  disparity in medical care for African-Americans vs white Americans.  So I'd throw into the mix more financial aid for medical-school eligible black students.

Universal Healthcare definitely needs to go on the platform  - and the states have the power to make this happen.  Especially since a lot republican-controlled states refused to roll out the Expanded Medicaid program for adults living just below the poverty level.   Universal Healthcare-type program is available through the Affordable Care Act but the republican-controlled states refuse to allow it.

The Affordable Care Act A.K.A. "Obama Care" is a CRUEL JOKE.

It's actually the flip side or opposite of Universal Healthcare.

When it was first introduced there was a PUBLIC OPTION and NO MANDATE forcing you to sign up.
By the time they finished it and sent it through there was a MANDATE but no PUBLIC OPTION.

Universal Healthcare would have allowed people the option to choose a government sponsored free healthcare system with less amenities but alteast gives them basic health coverage.
Obama Care FORCES people to BUY insurance at a price or face a penalty, involves a ton of paperwork asking about your financial status and often pushes reponsibility off to the state medicaid programs where they are less funded and usually doesn't cover dental or vision!

I actually feel a little funny about bashing so many Republicans who were criticizing it because many of them were actually right about it being a bureaucratic mess.
Republicans were even right about it being disasterous to the economy because by forcing so many businesses to insure their fulltime employees......he gave them the greenlight to lay off a lot of people bust a lot more others down to part-time.

((shakes head))

You brought up another great point that should be included in any Black agenda.

Not only do I support more financial aid for qualified Black students.
I actually support FREE COLLEGE EDUCATION FOR ALL QUALIFIED STUDENTS.
Now I believe THIS is something that can actually be done at the state level.
I've heard from so many people that many of the state universities in California offered extremely low tuition back in the 60s and 70s and a lot of people today are stil benefiting off the good but low cost education they got from the U.C.'s and Cal States.

Certainly my view on healthcare and education reform are broadbased and sweeping but it's actually quite fair because when EVERYONE is granted the same access to certain institutions like health and education then you eliminate the problem that millions of working class people are going through right now where they're too poor to pay for things out of their own pockets but because they aren't dirt poor they can't take advantage of most of the government programs out there.

And college was free if you were a California resident...

When I went to the U. of Illinois back in 1951,  the tuition was $40 a semester which was about the average cost for all the members of the Big !0 midwestern college conference. Tuition stayed low for about the next 25 years.  No entrance exams were required. Every resident of the state of Illinois with a HS diploma was eligible to enroll there, but you had to maintain at least a 3.0 average or you'd "flunk out".

The City College of New York, walking distance from where I live, and the Alma Mater of people like Colin Powell and Jonas Salk was FREE!  Today a degree costs $86K (less if you commute) and that is assuming you graduate in four years.  On top of that, the school no longer has the reputation it once had, so the value of the education is lower--and still too costly for many in the community to attend, with out going deep into debt.

College should not be compulsory, but there should be quality free options available. The society and culture is FAR better off when the citizens are educated.

I too support free education as long as the students maintain 3.0 GPA

Infact, they should offer all students free room, board, and give them a small allowance to take care of their clothing and daily needs...as long as they maintain a certain GPA.

The costs of going to college far exceed tuition.
You have to eat and have a place to stay and have money for books, stationary, lap tops, accessories and a host of other items not covered in the tuition.

How many students can afford all of this while going to school full time?

I'm hearing from a lot of younger people that not only do Universities charge high tution but even the community colleges charge extrodinarily high "lab fees" for those who take medical and science classes on top of their tuition rates.

I've said it once and I'll continue to say it that college for the most part in America today is a well organized SCAM.

I agree that society is better off with an educated populous.
However we don't need universities to accomplish this.....
The knowledge of how to live a civil life can and should be taught in highschool (and at home).
Infact, it WAS for the longest time in America until they took it out of the schools in the 60s.

I'm sure Cynique could attest to the fact that HIGHSCHOOL students back in the 40s and 50s were better mannered and more professional and mature than COLLEGE GRADUATES today!

Hell, most of the kids I run into who just graduated American universities can't even spell without spell-check, have sloppy hand writing, and can't even count the change they owe you back.

Once the public educational system became intergrated, the powers that be decided to defund public education and let it go straight to hell.

If President Biden actually forgives student loan debt...this will partially come true for those who went to college in the past. I still blame Reagan for the end of free college tuition

Excellent discussion 6 years to today.

Considering the amount of money the US spends on defense and humanitarian aid provided to other countries in crisis (Ukraine), the only real reason healthcare and education are not free is because 1) Americans can afford it and 2) there is no incentive in helping minorities groups.

A capitalist country is motivated by money.

As I wrote in another thread, an AfroAmerican political agenda has to outline the needs of the people and in turn how it will benefit the investors.

Otherwise, the system already has programs that directly or indirectly address the most common things minority groups want without having to pay for it...welfare.

Any expansion to a welfare state (socialism)  is antithetical to a capitalist society.

That's why my idea of reparations would address healthcare, education, housing and employment.  But, that's another thread. 😎

There may never be a complete Black Agenda because Black people in the U.S. are not a political monolith.

We do not need free colleges unless similar funding is provided for trade schools. And if this is cost-efficient, the limit should be two years.

Not everybody wants to go to college and not everybody should. Who’s going to do the maintenance and upkeep in countless buildings and facilities? Who’s going to repair your vehicles? Manage retail stores? Drive the trucks that ultimately deliver goods? Do the construction of your homes and businesses? Manage the warehouses and other storage facilities? One does not need a college degree for those tasks.

Many are simply deluding themselves when they insist that a college education will save most of us. The escalating cost of a four-year college degree negates any suggestion that it could be free.

And the blaming of former President Barack Obama continues. Just what don’t some of you get? Barack Obama was elected to be President of the United States. Not Black America. He was more a symbol who was blessed with an ability for soaring oratory and the most in the world loved him. Contrast Obama with the clown who followed him.

How many of you can give a speech as Obama did? Garner millions of Whites to listen to you and then vote for you when they really had no idea of who you were and what you stood for?

Obama couldn’t do half the things he wanted as POTUS with the racist obstructionists in Congress opposing his every move. But some Blacks blame him for their ills anyway. I credit Obama for winning twice and saving the country from a Depression. He did the best he could. Trump did little but insult everyone who didn’t kiss his azz.

Trump wanted to fire Patriot missiles into Mexico to destroy cartel cocaine labs and thought China was creating hurricanes that Beijing could aim at the U.S. Such brainy brilliance from a dude who labeled nations in Black Africa a "chithole countries."

Trump’s tariffs on China are being paid by you and I, our families and friends. His downplaying Covid-19 led to untold suffering. No wonder Trump supports Putin’s invasion of Ukraine. All bullies enjoy hurting people.

Putin is lying when he claims the invasion of Ukraine is to rid that country of Nazis. Because the Nazis are in the U.S. Most simply call themselves Republicans.

ObamaCare is a joke? Not to the millions who gained healthcare who never had any before. Why are so many of you quick to denounce your own? Is your healthcare plan perfect? If you believe you have a super idea, then run for office and promote it.

Black People need better access to quality healthcare and mental health care. We need our Voting Rights restored because we lost them more than eight and a half years ago. We need our women protected. And our children should be able to learn our History and Herstory.

As always, the question is how to do we accomplish this?

Not through internecine warfare.

It's refreshing to see us talk about solutions that should make up a political agenda. Too often we leave that to whites. I would add a few things. I'm no expert these are just opinions.

1.  Fully fund and expand the power of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission to address widespread employment discrimination.

 2. Pressure the Senate to pass the George Floyd Police Reform Act which among other things removes qualified immunity for police officers in civil suits.

 3. Do the same with voting rights legislation like the John Lewis Voter Rights Act and the For the People Act that would stop voter suppression.

When it comes to community development let's empower local governments and community groups by tying the amount of Federal funding for transportation, infrastructure, and block development grants to plans and progress towards poverty reduction, creation of living wage jobs, and reducing racial disparities. The cities, states, and towns, that have plans and meet goals are favored with funding. Furthermore, let's create and fully fund Federal/ Local partnerships to find and implement solutions to racial and economic inequality that fit unique circumstances. Lastly, fund community-based groups and programs with a track record of results. `

All these things will require a more effective and better coordinated black politics that combines propaganda, lobbying, voting, grassroots organizing, street protests, research, internal discussion, and debate. This will be long-term process with many of us never seeing the results. But that has always been the nature of our struggle. Will white people support any of this?  No. Many of them will oppose us. But others will join us. More importantly we must continue to fight disrupting the normalcy and tranquility of this society until the powers that be meet our demands.

@KENNETHAnd they are viable opinions too! I was fortunate to work on a multimillion dollar project  in West Virginia like the one you've mentioned in community development.  It works but there is a lot of push back from people who believe they are too proud to accept help. Thank you for adding to the list!

Many of our people love to complain about Obama and other presidents not doing anything or enough for the AfroAmerican community, but the fact is....what SOLID AGENDA do we have that we have put to them to act on?

AfroAmericans can be so juvenile and even infantile at times in their thinking, believing that politicians are ALTRUISTIC and should just get in office and be nice to them without direction or demand.

African Americans conveniently forgot that Barack Obama was elected be President of the United States.

Not Black America.

I get tired of writing these two sentences because some reality challenged clods cannot seem to figure this out.

When I first joined this discussion forum years ago, there were several folks on here blaming Obama for this and for that. Most were male.

The same is true in two of the Black Issues forums that I moderated on Facebook. Obama didn't do this. Obama didn't do that. Where's my $1 million Reparations check? How come I don't own a home?

And after dealing with so many of them, it dawned on me why they hated Barack. They were jealous of him. They lacked his oratorical skills, they lacked his congenial and professorial demeanor and they could not hope to draw millions of followers to them.

They also failed to personally accomplish what they hoped for. To get a high paying job, the house of their dreams and live on easy street. In times, this too, was revealed in a bevy of angry comments.

It was pure jealousy. It was revealing. And it was quite sad.

Even Rev. Jesse Jackson fell victim to envy of Obama.

This did not mean that most Blacks didn't care for Obama. The overwhelming majority of African Americans and dark and brown skinned men and women around the world who considered themselves kin of the Black Race lionized Barack Obama.

We celebrated his ascension to the White House. We sat before our TV's as the Obama family graced that stage in Chicago's Grant Park and drank in the cheers. We Blacks took immense collective pride in having Obama elected.

Only the angry, the grousing and the bitter at having no one pay attention to them took offense at Barack's accomplishments.

That's what haters do.  Some of the very same folks who cheer success will turn around and become jealous, bitter and angry and pray for downfall.

Yet, it is by design that some human beings function in this manner (greed, jealousy, envy, hate, etc.).

Universal love would solve all problems but apparently that's too hard considering the way human beings treat each other. 😎

@ProfD

That is a nice thought until one considers that Cain, the first son born to the first Biblical human couple, killed his younger brother Abel, due to jealousy.

People are going to rage when they're exposed as being wrong. Or lying about their so-called expertise. I've run into so many individuals who became unbalanced when confronted with folks who actually knew what they were talking about.

Which reminds me of something I had to tell a few students ... "Blowing out someone else's candle does not make yours shine brighter."

It took me a long time  to accept this truth:

Some will never clap for you.jpg

You're right that many AfroAmericans who criticized Obama was jealous of him and his success and ability to climb the ladder so high in this system.
However, I personally believe Jesse Jackson would have made a MUCH better president than Obama.  I think he's just as smart if not smarter and would have been much more progressive and radical in his policies; especially as they relate to AfroAmerican issues.

When Obama was running for office, people are acting like HE was the first AfroAmerican to ever run....completely ignoring Shirley Chisum, Jesse Jackson, or Al Sharpton.

"Blowing out someone else's candle does not make yours shine brighter."

@KENNETH two of those issues will never happen at the federal level and the why I will not repeat. but law enforcement reform side voting reform will not occur through any legislation of the congress, and with the makeup of the supreme court , any executive order applied to the states can be shot down with a lawsuit from a state/county/city. executive orders are not laws for a reason.

The equal employment opportunity commission may get expanded but the current financial situation isn't over from being settled and until then, nothing

When POTUS Obama was selected and allowed to hold the keys to the Bentley that is America for 8 years, the real folks in charge *knew* that he would drive carefully and not put so much as a scratch on it.

White folks could not have drawn up a better black man to wear the POTUS title.  POTUS Obama was the total package.  With that 1st black POTUS box checked, it's back to business as usual.

Adding insult and proving that *anybody* can wear the title, one of the most intelligent POTUS in history turned over the reigns to the class clown.  🤣😎

And he SHOULD have put him in cuffs because even back in 2015 there was more than enough evidence that he was colluding with Russia to steal the election and there was ample evidence that the Republican officials in various states were actively suppressing AfroAmerican votes.

I love ya, ProfD, but I completely disagree. It's a shame so many Black people occasionally think the same thing.

However, I am sure you recall the frenzied and unending hatred that greeted Barack Obama's election and inauguration. The birth of the Tea Party, the "We Want Our Country Back " campaigns, the non-stop insults and putdowns that greeted the first family.

I have not forgotten any of that. Now, explain just who the "real people" are whom you believe were supposedly in charge? Because in the U.S., it was Barack Obama, his VP and the rest of Obama's cabinet who were in charge for eight full years. Obama did not hand the leadership of this nation over to Trump. The voters did.

Black people have this incredible inability to lose a conspiracy mindset that tells them that in some way and somehow, a limited number of super brainiac White people control all levers of life.

Which is bullchit.  If White people were so superior, so incredibly smart and so mind-numbingly controlling of everything, Black people would still be Slaves and in no way could a highly educated Black man ascend to the highest office of the land. Twice.

I cannot believe that in this year of 2022, there are still Black men and women living in dread of a super secret cabal of White people supposedly in charge and dictating the affairs of this entire planet. Sounds scary. Sounds numbing. Sounds incomprehensible  - because it is.

Does this super secret group of brainiac White people control China, Putin's Russia, or even Mexico? No. It can't even control petroleum output in the OPEC nations.

Obama knew he was elected to be President of these United States, not Black America. I get tired of repeating this. He was our race's first chief executive and Commander-in-Chief. I am hoping he won't be the only one.

In the U.S., momentous and lasting change is often accompanied by great violence or great social upheaval. We are living through a major attempt to drag this country back to the days of 1820 when White demands where instantly met, White desires where immediately considered and White misgivings were promptly regarded.

The difference is we now have a large group of Black traitors and members of other ethnicities arrayed against us. The mass media has morphed into a 24-hour, individually geared, flavored milk dispensing titty that lulls most to sleep. While one third of humans on this polluted globe are likely worried about surviving or even living to next week, the majority of the well-fed are mostly interested in being entertained.

Does anyone really believe this super secret group of brainiac White people actually conjured up this present reality?

A world where the atmosphere has warmed to dangerous levels. Where the weather is out of control? Where corporate executives have lost all semblances of a conscience and push for profits at all costs, no matter who dies from unsafe products, or who cannot afford them. Where countries, once thought backward and inconsequential, are now capable of altering world history or the economy though terrorism or by withholding essential commodities?

If there is a super secret cabal of supposedly brainiac White people in charge, I think it's safe now to call them what they really are: Dumbasses.

@Stefan, it's all good. We may not agree on everything or much of anything. It's all about the discussion.

I'm not the person who disparages our 1st black POTUS. I was extremely proud of him.  I also applauded his effort in trying to get things done while sitting in the seat.

But, I also know how governments work around the globe from democracies to dictatorships and everything in between. It's a well-oiled machine.

It's not about believing in super secret cabals and societies. Just a matter of paying attention to how things transpire around the world.

Again, white supremacy is the most powerful force on the planet right now. A failure to understand what it is and how it works, everything else will only lead to confusion.

Mass media is definitely an opiate that either has people shaken, stirred and agitated or comfortably numb.

Then, there's the distractions of gross consumerism and entertainment to keep folks anesthetized too.

Collectively, white folks aren't dumb at all. Thinking decades ahead, they know exactly what they're doing to maintain power.

If this wasn't true, white supremacy would have been dismantled a long time ago.   😎

Believe it or not. A lot of Black people believe in a super secret brainiac White cabal.

I will never agree that White people in different countries collectively plan for decades ahead. How many European national leaders or even so-called geo-political analysts could say for certainty that Vladimir Putin would actually invade Ukraine? None could. Maybe a few speculated, but none could predict for sure.

Events move too fast for world views to remain stable.

And now that Battle has been Joined in Eastern Europe, we can count on this likely happening in the short term:

Unless Putin resorts to using nuclear weapons, this conflict may drag on for at least the balance of 2022.

Millions in Africa, India and elsewhere will likely end up starving because the grain that is normally shipped from Ukrainian ports has been diverted or blocked by Russia.

There's a good chance Binyamin Netanyahu will once again become PM of Israel, bringing his whole plague of recklessness, demands and interference in U.S. politics to the fore.

One never knows what China will do. Though it's likely Beijing will find some understated way of aiding Russia in its conflict with Ukraine. To China, the Ukraine-Russo War presents an ideal opportunity to expose U.S.
vulnerabilities in the Pacific as well as Europe. Russia has already weakened the NATO alliance.

That's just the military side. There is still the political turmoil that must be reckoned with. The Tigray-Ethiopian Civil War. The Malaysia-Rohingya crisis and the lingering resentment from Egypt and Sudan over Ethiopia's Grand Renaissance Dam. Most forget that Trump wanted the U.S. to side with Egypt and Sudan, the better to pound a historic Black African nation. I don't see many speaking up in defense of China's Muslim Uyghurs minority.

I mentions this because Black servicemen and women from the U.S. and other western nations may be called upon to fight in these far off lands. These are not our conflicts, but western powers will arrange that they could be. The war that I did not want to mention, but which I think will occur is a conflict with Iran.

There will be little chance of avoiding this war, especially if Netanyahu assumes control of Israel again. Another John Bolton sponsored NeoCon fantasy.

The Russian/Ukrainian conflict had been ongoing and has only intensified because Putin doesn't want them to join NATO. Putin knows how the current US leadership thinks. Putin doesn't want NATO on his border.

The G7/8  and G20 Summits are held for select countries to collectively make decisions and plans for the present and future as far out as decades ahead.

IMO, Putin or nobody else will be using nukes at any time. It remains to be seen how long he will be allowed to smack Ukraine around like an under-performing trick. It could last for years.

Some white folks believe there are too many non-white people in the world. In their warped minds, directly or indirectly starving millions in Africa, India and elsewhere is a form of population control.

Neither China nor the US wants any smoke with the other. China is the US labor force.  America does not want to pay its own labor force a decent living wage to produce  goods. The most wealthy folks are happy with the arrangement.

Every conflict around the world does a few  things...1) destabilize government, 2) reduce population and 3) sell more weapons, goods and services.

Most military personnel don't really think about what they have signed up to do. To kill or be killed for national interests doesn't dawn on most people until they enter a war zone and/or before they retire.

Geopolitics is a dirty business. It's all fun and games until the fighting and killing starts. 😎

I just read this same "thesis" in the Atlantic. At first, I thought I was so sick of white folks telling the story after the fact, and then I realized his article was prognostication just like yours. I was preparing to answer one of your comments yesterday, but I got all tied up in my words. The point I would have illustrated (if I didn't have to get back to work) is "there's nothing new under the sun."  Every modern political strategy dates back to African Antiquity. So they're not ahead of Black/African/Afro Americans. We just forgot our history. I feel like I'm back in my 5 percenter days - when we sang "Study your Lessons, It's the only way to Learn."...today I would add "know your history" to the"Love is the Message" tune. In fact, I realize even my topic sentence should ask, "What African Political strateg(ies)y should we resurrect."
