I just saw this on the news.
It's interesting to see tso many Asians and Latinos were involved.
Just like Mexican and White mobs were fighting eachother weeks ago at another Trump rally.  It appears that THIS generation of Latinos and Asians are just now waking up to the racism and oppression that Black people have been complaining about for centuries.

When the Nazis and Klan were just targetting Black people and telling them "go back to Africa"....they didn't care.  But when Trump and other right wingers start seriously talking about sending Muslims and Latinos back,  or building walls and keeping them from coming here NOW they feel it's time to take action....lol.

White supremacists are grossly out numbered, but they and their sympathizers are seemingly armed to the teeth.  And if push comes to shove they have the governments backing--especially if the Donald Trumps begin to proliferate, and continue to gain even more success and attention.

I watch Bill Maher's program pretty regularly; I find his show entertaining.  But he is constantly describing everyone who does not agree with his ideas as living in a bubble.  In reality he is living in a bubble too.  He does not truly appreciate just how bad off many Americans and as a result can't seem to wrap his head around why anyone would follow Donald Trump, become a Nazi, or join the Klan.  Educated, happy, confident people with options and prospects can't be bothered with Donald Trump.  I guess rich celebrities don't really see this...

The problem with most Hollywood liberals or "Left coast liberals" is THEIR definition of "liberal" doesn't jive with the traditional definition.

Liberal means "open minded" and tolerant.

When I was a kid, "liberal" used to mean you supported the rights of Black people and women.
But now it seems to have morphed into some weird camouflouge quilt of veganism, environmentalism, and long distance running.

Most Hollywood so-called liberal and most wealthy White "liberals" in general are just as intolerant and close minded as their consertive Republican counterparts.
Having lived on the West Coast many of the White so-called "liberals" there are.....

-Intolerant of anyone who doesn't recycle the way THEY think people should recycle....taking precious time to separate your garbage into 4 or 5 differnt categories to place in the appropirate bin.

-Intolerant of those who go to resturaunts and not tipping the waitor or waitress ATLEAST the customary 15%....despite the fact that you may be poor or working class and unlike them don't have money to give away.

-Intolerant of people who eat a lot of red meat.

-Many are intolerant of those who profess a religious faith.

Another problem is because most of them tend to live in rich secluded enclaves in California or New England and only run with the same circle of White liberal friends.....they are out of touch with the rest of America and especially poorer Blacks and Latinos; the very people whom many claim to empathize with.

This was one of my issues with Bernie Sanders.
People called him a liberal and I liked some of his ideas, but when you come from a place where there isn't many Black people I have to wonder how would certain issues that are dear to AfroAmericans be prioritized in your agenda.

I've often found that in SOME respects I've had more in common with and easier conversations with poor rednecks than I've had with wealthy so-called liberals who often tended to be smug in their attitude and intolerant of any political idea that they didn't read off the Huffington post.

Yeah, I hear you.  While the separate their trash they have outsized carbon footprints driving luxury cars everywhere and having unnecessarily large homes.  They even fight to maintain lawns during a water crisis.  They destroy public education while their children go to private schools, and on and on.... it is all for show, to make themselves feel good while the rest of the nation struggles.

Your critique of Bernie @Pioneer1, could be readily applied to Obama.  Would you make the same critique of him?

Link to comment

No I wouldn't, for a number of reasons.....

First the issue with Obama isn't sensitivity or recognizing which issues would be dear to the hearts and concerns of Black America.

-He's half Black himself and no doubt has experienced what most other Black males have in this society.
-He chose to marry a Black woman which says a lot about his character.
-He spent time living in and successfully organizing in one of the largest Black communities in the United States.

So it's not his sensitivities to or abilities to address Black issues that I would critique Obama on...but his INTENTION.

He KNOWS what the problems are as well as some of the the solutions, but just won't bother to impliment them.

However with Mr Sanders.....

Bernie comes from one of the Whitest states in the union and probably has had very limited interactions with Black people outside of the political arena. I'm guessing the only time he's come into contact with poor or working class AfroAmericans is while working in Washington D.C. No matter how well meaning he may intend to be, it's difficult imagining that he would be sensititive enough to certain issues

Hummm...

  • Sure Obama is "1/2 Black," but he like Bernie was raised by a white woman far from other large groups of Black people.
  • So he chose to marry a Black woman, but plenty of white people do that.  And do I surmise from the statement that you question that character of Black men who chose to marry white women--including many Black activists?
  • Yeah, I'll give you the 3rd point, but Hyde Park, where Obama lived is not exactly the "Wild 100s," and it was not like he socialized among the people, he was part if the Chicago elite.  Indeed that elitism was evident by the people he hired.

It is not clear to me what you mean when you say that Bernie is not sensitive to "certain issues." He is the only candidate talking about "certain issues" that should matter to all working class people, which includes most Black folks.  Yeah Hillary picked up these talking points in reaction to Bernie's popularity, but for her the rhetoric is more political not part of an ideology.  Hillary is much more like Obama, than Bernie is--don't you think?

Besides how are the Black people in Chicago fairing after 7 years of an Obama presidency?  As far as I know, Obama has not even bothered to give any of the Black owned newspaper so much as an interview.

@Pioneer1   IMO, Liberals are what Millennials will grow up to be with their vegan diets, and their environmental concerns and their running regimens - pains in the ass who take themselves too seriously.  Bernie has been described as a 1960s Trotskyite  whose only major accomplishment has been his making a career out of articulating the grievances of the working classes. He's also been characterized as having a big ego that  figures in his not liking to be challenged by anyone including his own supporters, and has  also been accused of demonstrating a  paternalistic attitude toward black folks. These criticisms resonate with me just like the criticisms of Hillary Clinton resonate with her foes.

Obama seems to have been laying the groundwork for a presidential run for quite a while  and this made him very expedient in the choices he made. He undoubtedly married a black ivy-league educated woman because this would not offend anyone and would, furthermore, enhance his image.  Bi-racial Obama does a very credible job of coming across as a cool black brotha in demeanor and speech. But the issue of race diminished, after he was elected as evidenced by the way he tuned out black spokesmen once he made it to the white house.

@Troy Once elected Obama focused on the possible rather than what turned out to be the impossible goal of radical change. If he couldn't bring significant change, what makes anyone think that Bernie can, especially since he's not a true Democrat?

Well Cynique in hindsight I don't believe Obama's goal was radical change.  Nor do I think if should have been.

Universal health care was a lofty enough goal, but that turned out to be a windfall for insurance companies without the public option. Indeed the Obama presidency has been a tremendous windfall for corporate America. The idea that any of the large financial institutions responsible for the mortgage tragedy are doing great today is a travesty of justice.

So while Obama, and the likes of Bill Maher go on about how great America is doing, Bernie is at least articulating the anger many of us feel.  Whether Bernie could have done something went Obama could not is a moot question, but I do think Bernie intentions would have been to actually do something.

I try to ignore all the personality assessments, personal motivations the media talking heads try to apply to candidates. Because these and either objective or unknowable. Even reporting on what a candidate says is not as important outside of the context of what they have done.  I wish the media would report more on what candidates have actually accomplished....

Where did this photo of Bernie Saunders come from?  It is not on the page linked; I'd like to check the source.  Funny someone took the time to circle the white guy, as if anyone would have difficulty finding him :-)

I have a great deal of respect for the white folks that protested in the deep south, risking and even giving their lives, to support Black people.

Ooh, puleeze.  Who doesn't know that Bernie Sanders was active in the civil rights movement dating back to the 60s??? It's common knowledge, and something he and his black followers are constantly touting in pursuit of the black vote.  What my post clearly stated  were other things that have been written about Sanders, by some of Hillary followers who accuse of him being a  cantankerous, ultra-left leaning socialist Democrat. And, of course, knowledgeable people are aware that Hillary Clinton has her supporters among the old guard of black civil rights leaders, including Jesse Jackson, and I don't hear anybody defending her against character assassination or lecturing about her past history in the civil rights movement. sigh.  (Too busy forsaking black zealotry by calling black people losers.)  LOL

Once again old news from the past surfaces as if it something just brought to light, and any current sidelights are dismissed by those who aren't interested in the rumors and hearsay that actually have an influence on the political process.

I can hardly wait for "someone" to put up the old Chris Rock meme, referring to the 4th of July as "a holiday for white people", posting it as if this is something hot off the press!  SMH

Sara, you are being way too sensitive.  I asked a simple question, no hostility, just curiosity.  I was actually interested in sharing your post, but I wanted to make sure the photo came from a trusted source.  The white guy in the photo could be anyone.  I can't tell that is Bernie with any certainly by looking at the photo.  I never wrote that you drew the circle. Again your hyper-sensitivity makes you see things that are simply not there.

Most sites are fact not checked or vetted in anyway, they are just people, like you, sharing unattributed stuff they found.  Of course you all may have positive intent, but because you don't check or cite sources you often spread things that are simply not true.

The only link in you post was this one: http://pdafund.com/component/k2/item/70-25-things-you-may-not-know-about-bernie-sanders and the photo is not on that page.

Sara think about it for a second; why one Earth would I have any hostility against you?  You are not a threat.  If I wanted, with a press of a button, I could delete everything you ever posted here.  What you confuse with hostility is only an attempt to check a source, nothing more

If you were not so sensitive, you'd probably observe that I treat everyone who posts here with love and respect.  That does not mean that I will agree with everything they post, or that I will hold my tongue when I disagree.

If you really want post where you will never be challenged, or exposed to perceived hostility, you would probably enjoy Facebook more.  Facebook prides itself on helping members only see the things that conform their world view. and if Facebook ever slips up members can unfriend the offender-- a sensitive person's paradise.

I am curious as to what about this board rivets Sara so much. Is there anything here that encourages her sticking around?? Between clashing with other posters and sighing about what she perceives as their lack knowledge, she thinks she is victim of bullying and hostile, unfair treatment. Moreover, she is the biggest offender when it come to her pro-black agenda because the only blacks she approves of are ones that conform to her narrow little personal criteria. Maybe if she didn't look upon this site as a classroom and herself as an omniscient teacher she'd be less frustrated.

Get real.  Anybody who follows what's currently going on in politics knows that Bernie Sanders is the consummate  Liberal activist, left over from the civil rights movement. In fact I've seen this picture you posted here, on FaceBook more than once.   I just have to keep reminding  myself that what's old to me is apparently new to certain people, and you need to remind yourself to stop underestimating the awareness of people on this board.  And while you're revealing all of this stale information do you have anything new and interesting to reveal as to why civil rights veterans Jesse Jackson and John Lewis  are not backing Bernie? Shall we wait while you scour the internet to find out what you don't know?

If it wasn't for rumor mongering and slam fests between the opposing sides in the presidential race, not to mention the candidates, themselves, social media would have much less traffic. People constantly spread gossip about Hillary Clinton and I repeated hearsay about Bernie. But you have so little perspective you are totally incapable of looking at the big picture.

Fess up,  sara, you're squatting here on this site, trying to get in where you fit in because YOU HAVE NO LIFE. And after  being busted out by Troy  you have to try and distract from this by resorting to your same ol tired litany. Yawn. Talk about transparency and clinging desperation, you should change your name to Saran Wrap.  LMAO

Sara you are the only one saying you said something that is not true.  The only thing I was interested in doing was finding the source of the image to determine if I could trust that it is indeed what you say it is.  I asked your your assistance, by providing the source but rather than helping you went on a paranoia fueled rant.

But I downloaded the image, ran a googloe image search, and found an unaltered version on Getty: http://www.gettyimages.com/pictures/civil-rights-leader-dr-martin-luther-king-jr-sitting-with-news-photo-50397246  But only MLK is named as being in the photo.  The image is all over social media, but I don't use unattributed information from social media as a source of information.

I could find known images of Bernie from the period and compare them--and still I could be wrong, but it is not important enough for me to go through that effort.

I dunno I guess I can't engage with Sara on any level, without drama, so I won't bother anymore.

@SaraYes, someone does have to tell the truth but an untrustworthy liar like you is the last person in the world to do it.  You're self-aggrandizement is beyond ludicrous.  If you didn't have Google and Wiki and YouTube, you'd be lost.  All you do is cut and paste recycled information. And it's debatable whether everything you post is true.  You are totally ignorant in you inability to appreciate the free wheeling nature of this site and the fact that many of the posts here are of the op-ed variety as opposed to hard news reporting.  Who are you to try and set the tone and monitor the comments and observations made by people who visit here?  Your obnoxious presumptuousness is another example of how deluded, irrelevant and self-important you are, and what a need you have to try and impress people. But where Cynique's Corner is concerned, you're nobody of importance. Just a wanna-be.

And recognizing messages applies to more than just memes, as proven by someone like you who is sorely lacking in depth and insight.  Your myopic tunnel vision prevents you from being anything other than an superficial babbling parrot who fantasizes that she is performing a public service for the audience of lurkers she imagines are hangin' onto her every word.  AALBC's very own self-appointed diva of data.  LMAO.

Instead of cowardly shrouding yourself in anonymity and using this site as a showcase for your blather, why don't you start your own blog, where you can wax supreme and block anyone who sees you for the shallow ideologue that you are - ol Isis sara, a "reject-turned-cyber-terrorist" who has infiltrated this board and aims to shoot down anyone who isn't awed by her mediocrity. Yawn.

Lol @ "hummm..."

To some of your points.......

Being raised by White parents may affect a person's personal values and cultural norms but doesn't affect their actual phenotype (except for not being able to properly do Black girls' hair...lol). As long as Obama looked like an AfroAmerican he would have had atleast shared some of the same racist experiences in this society that other AfroAmericans shared despite his family background...which means he would indeed be able to relate on SOME level regardless as to how minimal.

Whether or not a man marries a Black woman or even chooses to marry PERIOD doesn't necessarily have any bearing on his character as far as I'm concerned.
But the fact that a mixed man who was raised by a White family in a White society and CHOSE to pursue and marry an obviouly Black (rather than very light or almost White) woman from a strong Black community and then decides to live in it tells me that he's not running from his Blackness nor is he afraid to express his love for it.

I'm not an Obama defender, his policies have done next to nothing for the AfroAmerican community. But again, my issue with Bernie isn't his intent but his ABILITY to help us.

It's hard to put in words exactly why I don't have much confidence in Bernie Sanders. It's more intuitive than intellectual.

Vermont is one of the Whitest if not THE Whitest states in the Union, how can a man representing that state possibly be able to effectively govern the affairs of such a diverse nation both racially and culturally?

Plus he considers himself a Democratic Socialist which probably means he wouldn't stress Black business ownership too much b
Many socialists have a nasty habit of "diverting" the focus on racism and making it about economics or classs assuming that White supremacy will just "fade away" once more socialist policies are in place.

Perhaps if Mr Sanders were mayor of a major city first or governor of a state with a large diverse population where I could see his policies in action I'd have more confidence in him.

Cynique

Come on, you really think Barack chose to marry Michelle as some sort of political move....lol.

With all the other beautiful and well educated Black women I'm sure he came across in college and at his various university positions I'm sure he had his pick of others.
It seems to me the ONLY reason he chose her was out of love and actually wanting her.

Sure Pioneer they way we look is indeed a factor of how we are treated; gender, height, beauty, race, weight, etc are all factors.

You can say that Obama is treated like other Black folks because he is "black," but do you think a dumb, dark skinned, short, fat, Brother would navigate the world the same ease as Barack has simply because both are Black?

Again, I assert Barack's upbringing, innate ability, ambition, and even phenotype, in combination is not typical of anyone, certainly not your garden variety African American.  Either way, nothing in President Obama's background has predisposed him to doing anything more for Black people than any white politician.

I don't think Obama looks like the typical "mulatto" most American's are used to seeing.
His skin isn't that light and his hair definately isn't the texture of most mixed people.

enhanced-buzz-24756-1339555928-14.jpg

Look at that kinky hair.
Looks like Michael Jackson when he was still with the Jackson 5.
He looks more "Black" that mixed to me.

There is nothing about his phenotype that I see would cause White society in general to treat him any different than any other young AfroAmerican man.

Unless Trump was right about him being born and raised in a village in Kenya, he undoubtably experienced America as a Black male growing up and intimately knows the stresses and problems Black people face in this society.

As far as his accomplishments.......
I don't think his looks play as big of a role as you suggest.
I believe his brain and articulation were the biggest factors for his elevating increasingly through
this nation's best academic institutions as well as his successful political career.

American politics and acadamia are largely controled by Anglo-Saxon "old establishment" White people who are well known for seeing ALL people of color as the same  (meaning "not White") regardless as to how light or dark they may be.
Perhaps his lighter skinned may have been impressive to a darker skinned MICHELLE....lol....but not to those White folks running the country.
They just want to know is he smart enough to help them carry on their traditions and keep the money flowing in.

Remember......
A short fat dark skinned woman named Oprah (who is also brilliant) had more clout and prestige in America than even HIM and he had to go to HER for help launch his national image.

@Pioneer1Oprah is not short and is more accurately described as "thick" and golden brown, IMO.  What I've discovered among my people is that color tone tends to be in the eye of the beholder.  People are prone to use their own color as a yard stick of someone else's color.  One person's brown is another person's dark.  One person's yellow is another one's light brown.  One person's black is another person's brown. I'm frequently surprised when someone describes a person whom I haven't met to me. because I have a different take on skin shades, one with a  broad spectrum of browness.  In my eye, blackness also has degrees of "dark" skin.

IMO Obama benefits from his height, his slenderness and his regular features.  He color is somewhat irrelevant because black men are not subjected to colorism as much as black women are. His articulateness is certainly a plus, and his black accent and stride are what identify him as a brotha.  Obama is a true mulatto because he is the product of a pure African and a pure Caucasian.  When a white person marries a light-skinned person of color, then different phenotypes come into play.  Negroid hair certainly seems to be a dominate trait because it is always a good indicator of a person's blood lines.  It is what identifies all those fair-skinned, blue/green eyed NBA players with hair that isn't straight who are comprising a new generation of hoopsters, the offspring of the millionaire black athletes who are their fathers and their trophy white wives.

As for Obama's choice in a wife, considering his ambitions, I don't think he would've chosen a plump, high-school educated dark skinned woman to fall in love with.  He reserved his affections for someone who suited his purposes.

Screen-shot-2014-03-13-at-2.41.15-PM.png

At any rate, we're not just looking at these figures through the eyes of AfroAmericans ONLY but also the eyes of the White majority and how THEY perceive Obama or Oprah.
To most White Americans Oprah is a dark skinned woman.
Now if you want to compare her to Michael Jordan or Flava Flav, well....I recon she's not that dark.

I'm a little curious, what do you mean by Obama's "regular" features...???

As for Obama's choice in a wife, considering his ambitions, I don't think he would've chosen a plump, high-school educated dark skinned woman to fall in love with. He reserved his affections for someone who suited his purposes.

Someone who "suits his purposes"???????

You talk as if the man was a controlled experiment since birth and conspired to get the perfect wife for his generated image as if she's just one piece in his chess game.....lol.

Michelle is smart and very ambitious, but she doesn't exactly fit the bill of a "trophy wife" or the type of woman that a man would marry just for the image.
Actually she seems more like the active "Hillary Clinton" type who has her own agenda and sees herself more as a PARTNER, than a supporter of another man and his ambitions.

Ofcourse he probably wouldn't have chosen a woman with a mere highschool education because for one thing she wouldn't be in his circle for them to meet.
President Obama doesn't take me as the type that went around hitting on random women in the street and sweating the cashiers at KFC and Walmart for "them digits"...lol.

Nor would a woman of low education feel comfortable around him anyway...her self esteem would alway be threatened by the intellectual and academic aura of him and his collegues.

Most professionals meet their spouses WITH IN their profession.
Why?
Because most professionals are so focused on what they're doing they don't have time to look OUTSIDE for potential mates and the only way they do find one....if they ever find one...is if they happen to meet another professional they are immediately attracted to.

I'm sure they met at some work or academic related function as most professional marriages go as only another lawyer could have satisfied him intellectually and emotionally.

Besides, unless they have a lot of money to offer or wealth connections......who is gifted enough in discerning human personalities to know how valuable a potential spouse will be to one's future political ambitions?

I think Oprah may be sitting or leaning against something in that pose.  Her height is listed as 5'6'' on Google, which is a couple inches above average and she is shaded in that picture but  upon  further re collection I would concede that she is more cinnamon brown than golden. .

For the politically ambitious, image is very important and calculated "like a game of chess". It's not that far-fetched that once Obama set his sites on the white house, he envisioned the type of woman who would reflect well on him. I read an article by one of his white girlfriends in college who said she felt he broke up with her because he knew a white wife would not be good for his ultimate goal.  He and Michelle did meet within their professions but why would it require "a gift in discerning human personalities" to pick a wife that would be an asset in his field of endeavor?  How hard is this to do???

When I say Obama has regular facial features, I mean that they are neither keen nor blunt.

Nobody really knows what was on Obama's mind when it came to choosing a wife. It's not something he'd share with the world.  We see what he married, so we known what he didn't want.  And a suitable choice did not have to be a beautiful trophy wife; I repeat: it could simply be someone who was compatible with his political goals. And in seeking such a wife, falling in love with her shouldn't be ruled out when it came to his requirements.

We can speculate that he didn't want a divorce to blur his image which probably contributed to his adjusting his schedule when Michelle threatened him with one after his "calculated" grass roots organizing kept him away from home too often, leaving her alone with their young daughters. Guesswork is all anyone can do since we are not inside his head.

I shook Obama's hand at a Gala when he was campaigning for the Illinois senate.  I wouldn't describe him as brown.  To me, he was an amber shade - with purple lips.  ( Is there such a thing as an archtypical 1960s Black Muslim??  They came in all shapes, sizes and colors.)

And "wanna-be-know-it-alls" routinely resort to distorting the words of others, not to mention stating their opinions as facts.  Amber skin tone is not incompatiable with purple lips or gums just like pink lips and gums are found on dark skinned people, Dummy.    And I didn't refer to Michelle as a trophy wife inasmuch as a trophy wife is arm candy and I focused on her resume.   And since i was around during the 60s, I am confident in saying that there were no archtypical Black Muslims except in the eyes of people who can't see past their noses.
