My favorite male vocalist, female vocalist, writer and performer all commited suicide

Recommended Posts

The first artist had committed suicide before I became a fan. The second artist I actually saw perform live and I inadvertently insulted her. The writer hung himself. The performer died of an overdose of loneliness called drugs.

Why don’t you elaborate on your original post?

When did this place become the guessing game forum?

That is my modus operandus from time to time

I will, I was going to name the artist but I wasn't certain if this was a worthwhile post or if there would be any interest.

I'm assuming your are referring to Donny Hathaway (almost certainly) and Phyllis Hyman (my best guest).  Who were the performer and writer?

Yes ,the writer is David Foster Wallace. Here is an abbreviated clip from his commencement speech.

Prince

Prince was my FAVORITE musician since I was a teenager, I went to

several of his concerts and I own almost all of his albums, but after

his death and then when his drug use was exposed I was confused

about whether he composed his music naturally or if he was high on

drugs the whole time. Some of his music sounds schizophrenic and

it really bothers me to the point where I cannot listen to his music

anymore.

Which tracks?

The addiction was to fentanyl, which is a pain killer. Jumping off of six foot high speakers in heels for a decade probably wrecked his body. So my guess is the addiction probably started after he stopped dancing, because he was in pain.

You want me to name Prince tracks that sound schizophrenic?

Anything with crazy guitars or whatever other instruments he played.

Didn’t he play twenty-seven different instruments?  That is schizophrenic

right there.  Who tries to play that many instruments?

Erotic City comes to mind but there are hundreds.  Then there is all his

unreleased music, stuff in the vault.  There’s probably thousands of

compositions.  This can never be known, it will always be a mystery.

I don’t know how long he was on fentanyl but that is used for more than

just pain.  My Husband was on a fentanyl drip three years ago when he

was in an induced coma.  It was scarey but he got world-class care in

an Army hospital and he was fine.

Who knows what all Prince was on, he could have just been smoking

reefer, hash or doing LSD.

My question is whether he created his music naturally or whether he

was on some mind-altering substance.

And I will never know the answer to this.

I also don’t understand why he refused surgery for religious reasons

yet he thought it was acceptable to take dangerous drugs.

Are JWs cool with fentanyl?

I have so many unanswerable questions.

In 2 different documentaries i have seen about Prince, both of them reported that he was heavy into cocaine early on in his career. An older half brother and sister,  who have both since died, are the ones alleged to have claimed this, warning that someone needed to check this out and get him off of Cocaine.  He was apparently doing this drug in secret.  Prince, himself, revealed that he had epileptic seizures when he was a toddler but outgrew them.  He was an extraordinary individual, a musical genius, so nothing about him surprises me. The last song i liked by Prince was "Adore".  I couldn't get into his later work.  I was introduced to him by my kids in the 80s.  They were rabid fans of his.  i liked him best when he was raw and authentic, when Andre Cymone and Dez Dickerson were his side men.

This is a little outside the conversation but....
Did he tell you about any SPIRITUAL experiences while he was in the coma like leaving his body or journeying to other places?
Or was it just darkness, or was it like he went to sleep and woke up?

I had taken him to a V.A. doctors appointment when they determined

that he had edema and he was admitted into the Army hospital next

door.  He was due to be released after a couple of days but he had

an unexplained episode and they had to put him on a ventilator.

He was on it for about five days, they were going to take him off it

on Wednesday but then the doctor said he couldn’t breathe on his

own and they would remove it on Friday.  I went there every day

and stayed with my Husband for several hours.

Early that Thursday morning, I got a call from his nurse, they had

taken my Husband off the ventilator and he was asking for me.

When I got there I was so happy he was conscious because we

didn’t know whether he was going to make it.  My Husband and

I are very close, I have known him all my adult life.

After we talked for awhile, his voice was raspy and weak from

being intubated, he told me that he had seen and talked to God,

and that God gave him a message, he told me what it was but

he also asked me not to tell anyone else.  So I hate to leave

you wondering but I must respect his wishes.

He did not remember being in a coma or what happened when

he was talking to someone and collapsed, the visitors he had

or the times when he opened his eyes during the coma.

He is very religious, it was a nice message and it made sense.

Drugs and creativity go together like  hand and a love. Cocaine was big player on Wall Street in the late 80's. One of the managers was and his mistress were allegedly riding the line.

For me the Lovesexy was the last Prince Album that had me excited. I have to say I was a huge fan and had a lot of the unreleased material. The raw version of Open Book, Crucial and Still would Stand all Time area few of of my favorite boots. All the sound quality can be a bit uneven. I think after Wendy and Lisa, he was no longer in a band. It was just musical accompaniment. Although he had some great female vocalist.

I went to a few concerts one after show. The most

Open Book

Crucial

Still would Stand all Time

the bonus round

I think it's more than simply being a visionary that drives some of these entertainers to suicide.

It's the drugs as well as the over emotionalism that often comes with being a highly right-brained person.
Many entertainers....including musicians...are highly emotional and tend to be impulsive.

Something the average person may experience or observe and shake off and forget about in a few weeks may "get to" the overtly emotional artist due to their hyper sensitivity.
