The Newest / Latest Flood of Blacks in TV and Print Advertising and Mainstream Outlet Show and Movie Production, and more...

Recommended Posts

In today's super woke - hyper cancel culture - post-George Floyd era, blacks have suddenly and disproportionately been cast / inserted into nearly every facet of big and small screen entertainment, advertising, marketing and the like. Is this effort and push by probably mostly white paymasters a genuine pursuit of diversity, or is it just a deceptive feel-good moment?

@nels

This is a great topic with lots of well-researched links.

I know how time consuming this is, and I appreciate

your efforts.

The above quote/question is from a Quora member, and

it is puzzling why corporations and advertisers have

taken this approach.

I usually fast forward through commercials but whenever

I happen to catch one I have noticed that they feature an

interracial couple, or a white person with what looks to be

a mixed race child.

I don't understand what the point of these out-of-place

children is supposed to be.

Are they supposed to be adopted or foster children, or

what, because the adult that is with them doesn't ever

seem to be the natural parent.

Are corporations trying to convey that mixed race children

need to be rescued by whitey, or that Black people are

unable to care for their offsprings.

And why can't white people just have regular white kids

anymore, instead of curly haired dark ones.

The other thing that I find bothersome is the way that

corporations banished Aunt Jemima, Uncle Ben, and all

the other Black advertising icons.

Didn't we want to see ourselves on product packaging.

What was the problem and who complained.

Were we really that offended by Uncle Ben?

Mzuri, appreciate the feedback.  I also had heard that after Aunt Jemima was canceled, the nephew of the woman originated the role was quite upset.

@nelsThat being the case, why have you responded to my post?  Couldn't resist trying to do damage control, huh? Mission unaccomplished.

@nelsIf the shoe didn't fit you, you wouldn't be trying to wiggle out of what clearly describe you. tsk, tsk. What would humanity do if it didn't have paranoid prophets of gloom and doom to take the joy out of living - prognosticators like you who will be disappointed if, Heaven forbid, things work themselves out and Life goes on its merry way.   Cheer up, Chicken Little. Maybe one day the world will take you as seriously as you take yourself. Hard to imagine, however, about somebody who thinks the  party of Libertarian white supremists and thick skulled Neanderthals  is the answer to America's dilemma.  Liberals and Conservatives will never successfully co-exist and the obvious resolution is for those of like minds to hook up and go their separate ways.  The United States is done but you are too busy beating your breast to realize this.

@nels Do you know if said nephew had any financial loss from the removal? I know that in some of these media trademark/image rights/copyright scenarios, sometimes, small bits of money , but good money is given as part of the deal to this or that , that isn't worthy to mention in the wall street journal, but is valuable

Cynique, do you realize how small the statements you've made make you look / appear? They are the kind of minute retorts I used to see and hear from others, as far back as the 8th grade. The circular hyperbole you've laid out makes absolutely zero (0) sense (- , at least to me, that is -). Let's fast-forward on the IQ scale... How many physical points does it take to make a minimal (real) three-dimensional object? If you get this one right, you might get an 'attagirl'. On the other hand, if you get it wrong, watch that next step; it's a long way to the bottom. | white supremists? DYM white 'supremacist'? | thick skulled? DYM 'thick-skulled'? | Just sayin'. (?)

Actually, I do not know. However, there are many more relatives of the Aunt Jemima legacy who have something to say.

In the end, it's all about money. True or not, we'll all probably find out when the litigation clouds clear.

I think it's disgusting what advertisers are doing. This does not represent America and even if there are biracial couples that is like 5% of the population. White women are not obsessed with black men, as a matter of fact, it's the other way around. I hope this experiment goes away soon because I cant stand to watch another commercial where the black man actually has a family, had money and a nice job, nice car and a white wife when reality is far from that.

Let's start with Edward Bernays, Google him . Master of spin, Nephew of Sigmund Freud. Start with the tip of the advertising iceberg, Then let's go on to a Black truth seeker/ Open minded person, Take James Baldwin, Maybe even Dick Gregory, Professor Griff,  See how far those intelligent well read people have explored rabbit holes.Start there, and when you're all caught up......

This thread was the most popular page on the website this week, viewed thousands of times.

I watched the most recent season of Star Trek Discovery since this post was made.  Throughout the whole season, I kept thinking these guys are trying awfully hard to tick all the boxes. Seemingly every race, gender, and sexual orientation was represented.  The was only one white male and he was gay with a Black partner (of course)

The season culminated with the president of the Planet Earth being a Black woman (Played by Stacey Abrams), the leader of the earth defenses was a Black woman, and the commander of the starship enterprise another Black woman.  The commander is already a character I did not care for very much, as we could not go a single episode without her crying which really got on my nerves...

I had to ask myself why the creators of star trek going for so much diversity bothered me.  I mean Star Trek was always diverse, but Discovery is different they are trying too hard and it showed.

It is not like I feel bad for the lack of heterosexual white males on the show... Maybe it is the lack of heterosexual Black male characters.  Actually, there is one straight Black Male (but he was not human, so I guess that is good enough).  The "Brother" was killed in one episode, but brought back to life in the next one -- I guess they figured you can't kill off the only straight Black man.

This has been going on for some time now.  We have a Black spider man (thanks to the multiverse). On Broadway, I saw Black versions of The Wizard of Oz, Cat on a hot Tim Roof, and a Street Car Named Desire.

Black faces have been absent from mainstream media for so long I'm not gonna complain about a period of over-representation (assuming that is what the data says).

@Troy

Not just the creators of star trek but the house of the dragon or Rings of power shows are similar in presenting a multiracial populace in a fantasy world on par with somewhere in NYC.

you know why they are doing it Troy, you are not ignorant. the simple reality is, many people in humanity, want to see an image of complex multiraciality, and they don't care about plot to get it. The problem with the shows, is the writers have failed to provide the multiracial casting or visage,  the producers want through their accountants determinations through electronic assessment on the viewers desires WHILE also provide a story whose plot or characters are as qualified or natured as the source material.

But to me the problem is the one word you used... mainstream. I never use that word. I use the word white. When I see Hollywood, TV stations, Cable stations, streaming platforms. I don't see a mainstream, a word that suggest a minor stream exists and people are possibly being kept in the minor stream or excluded from the main stream. I see white media. I see white firms in white broadcasting channels presenting white stories and providing opportunity for white artists/thespians to be apart of it.

Now, white firms have the freedom to hire blacks but that doesn't make a show black. And doesn't mean black people must herd to that show or honor that show as a symbol of growth in the black community. Again, as with my Black wood argument. The black community in the USA has a long history of its own media. YEs, not as well known even by black people. Yes, absent the financing for the most glamorous. but it exists. It exists. Black people in the USA value being apart of white media because they want white media to become the mainstream. But private financing isn't the government. Judging by content of character, not color of skin is functional in government, but a white owner of a firm  has the right to give their dumb child the vice presidency of the firm over a black man with twenty matriculations and more recommendations. And the reason is simple, they own the firm. The whole point of owning is to be above merit. You own, you do what you want. thus why nothing is too big too fail.

My blackwood position goes into this

This post continues to be the most popular conversation on our forums over the last 30 days -- viewed over 9,100 times and more than 7,600 unique visitors.

What will it take to get more people to comment?  Even 1 percent of visitors shared their thoughts that would be 76 additional posters.

When I allowed guest posts (posting without creating accounts) there was more participation, but that opened the floodgates to spam, so I had to shut off guest posting.

@Pioneer1 here are some conspiracy theories for you 🙂

(1) I believe "big-social" is behind the spamming of discussion forums.  The know spamming forums make them harder to manage and forcing administrators to require logins.  This reduces participation and therefore competition.

(2) Racists troll Black forums to prevent Black forums from thriving while sowing dissent in the Black community.  (This one I'm actually inclined to believe, as there is ample evidence of it)

I'm not familiar with the logistics of social media platforms to agree or disagree on this one way or the other.

But I'm sure if money is behind it....so it a conspiracy.

ABSOLUTELY

They either do it themselves by getting an account and hiding their identity and pretending to be Black themselves even down to the hood and writing format....which is relatively easy to learn.
Now a days you have plenty of Black folks willing to "teach" a White dude how to talk and act like he's down and from the hood.

They just pretend to be Black and get the Black folks in that community to start fighting and turning on eachother to keep division and confusion going.
That's one of their oldest tricks.

But to be honest, now a days they don't even have to PRETEND to be Black.
A lot of White folks can openly start shit and get Black folks to fighting with eachother in school, on jobs, on the street, etc....it's gotten so pitiful.

Another way they do it is just PAY a Black person to troll Black websites.  Whisper in the ears of the readers and posters and introduce negative and self-destructive thoughts and habits into the community that keeps it weak and divide.  In turmoil.

The LGBTQIA+ people were good for this.
Finding Black people who are gay or lesbian and getting them to be bold with it and then encouraging them to force it into Black circles and make it mainstream.

It's also a common tactic Caucasians do with religion and HAVE been doing it for centuries.
Convert a few Black fools to follow their religion and use them to reach the other Black folks.

Speak of the devil......
Check out this latest show Tariq Nasheed did talking about this very thing, and how racists are using psy-ops through social media:
