Celebrating Our
Literary Legacy!
A GREAT NEW BOOK COMING JANUARY 2002
http://aalbc.com/reviews/the_god_who_begat_a_jackal.htm
The God Who Begat a Jackal
by Nega Mezlekia
The
great author of American letters, Albert Murray, wrote in his recently published
book From The Briarpatch, “The goal of the serious storyteller is to fabricate a
truly fictional legend, one that meets the so-called scientific tests of
validity, reliability, and comprehensiveness.” The Ethiopian author Nega
Mezlekia fulfilled Murray’s statement with the publication of The God Who Begat
a Jackal. Mezlekia, the author of the acclaimed memoir Notes from the Hyena’s
Belly, debuts with his first work of fiction in a magnificent joining of the
oral tradition of storytelling and inquisitive determination of a historian.
Mezlekia enfolds the distant past world of African royalty, slavery, class,
mystical figures, an inquisition and military battles that is the concluding
effect of a love between a male slave and a woman of privilege. The God Who
Begat A Jackal is an all-encompassing, enriching tale that I thoroughly enjoyed
and considered one of the best books of the New Year. ~Thumper, AALBC.com

Rags to
Riches Life of Quincy Jones Makes a Perfect Autobiography
Q: The Autobiography of Quincy Jones
by Quincy Jones
http://aalbc.com/reviews/q_the_autobiography_of_quincy_jones.htm
Q
is an almost perfect autobiography. Everything is there in just the right
amounts, including excitement, guidance, failures, wisdom, pain and joy. In
keeping with the fairy tale perspective of Jones' life his closing words offer
this advice on how to live happily ever after: "You don't have to let suffering
define your experience of life, and you don't have to pass it along to others
just because it hurts. You learn and grow from it -- you teach your pain to
sing. You let the light wash out the darkness." ~ Paige Turner, AALBC.com

Next Monthly Book Chat Session December
5th, 2001

The Coffee Will Make You Black reading group is
currently reading
Raising Fences by
Michael Datcher.
In Raising Fences, Michael Datcher offers a view of young black men
seldom seen in the media-men who long for loving, stable marriages, fatherhood,
and homes in safe neighborhoods. In this emotionally raw and intimate narrative,
Datcher reflects on his fatherless childhood in inner-city Los Angeles, his
attraction to local gangs, his promiscuity, and, at times, his lack of faith.
Our chat session is scheduled for Wednesday,
December 5th, 2001, 9:00 PM, Eastern Standard Time. If you have already read
Raising Fences, and would like to
participate in our on-line chat session; please join us in our new chat room
