He is the recipient of a MacArthur Genius grant, two PEN/Faulkner awards, and has been nominated for the National Book Award. Wideman lives in Manhattan and teaches at Brown University. ![]() http://aalbc.com/authors/gabriel_garcia_marquez.html Gabriel García Márquez was born in 1928 in the town of Aracatca, Colombia. Latin America's preeminent man of letters, he is considered by many to be one of the greatest writers of the twentieth century. He began his writing career as a journalist and is the author of numerous works of fiction and nonfiction, including One Hundred Years of Solitude and Love in the Time of Cholera. Gabriel Márquez was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1982. Marquez's novels One Hundred Years of Solitude and Love in the Time of Cholera were Oprah's Book Club selections. |
![]() http://aalbc.com/authors/maryann_reid.html Reid has authored five books; including Marry Your Baby Daddy (2005); a fictional account of three sisters who must marry their baby daddies in order to inherit 3 million dollars. A result of researching the novel, including interviews with hundred's of couples; Reid launched and produced an event in 2005 entitled, Marry Your Baby Daddy Day™ in New York. She has successfully produced the event for the past three years, with the lucky couples receiving a six figure all expenses paid dream wedding. |

![]() http://aalbc.com/authors/c_alexandra.html C. Alexandra Allen is an American author and poet born in Mount Vernon, New York and raised in the borough of Queens. She has been influenced by writers such as Langston Hughes, Nella Larsen, Zora Neale Hurston, Nikki Giovanni, The Last Poets, Sylvia Plath and Elizabeth Barrett Browning, but writes in a distinct voice. AALBC.com Book Reviews (Fiction)
![]() http://aalbc.com/reviews/safe_from_the_neighbors.html Safe from the Neighbors is a beautifully complex, multilayered novel with surprising depth. The most remarkable component of the novel is its narrative. Yarbrough does a remarkable job in not only developing three separate narratives, but he managed to fully develop each of them without shortchanging any one of them. In the hands of less capable writers, this novel, using this particular narrative, would have been a confusing hot mess. I was equally interested in each of the narratives. I did not wish that I was reading about the younger Luke when I was currently reading the mishaps of the older Luke. Yarbrough struck the essential balance that was needed in order to have successfully pulled off the narrative technique. |
![]() http://aalbc.com/reviews/my_mother.html One of my favorite authors in the whole wide world is back with a new novel that I loved, loved, loved! Maryse Condé's latest novel is Victoire: My Mother’s Mother. I’m calling it a novel because it’s a cleaner classification, but the book is much more than a novel. A case could be made that it is a memoir, historical fiction or roman a clef, or history of a family. The truth being Victoire is a combination of all of those components and yet it is uniquely a whole other type of story. I cannot put my finger on it, honestly, I don’t want to. I can say that this slim book is marvelous, a small nugget of goodness that can light up a room, a heart, or a person’s imagination. After reading the novel, it is easy to see Condé’s fascination with her grandmother and to be under Victoire’s spell, as well. |
![]() http://aalbc.com/reviews/love_anger.html For those of you who don’t know me or have not read any of my reviews, I have a tendency of getting extremely excited over republished books written by African American authors that have been out of print for a time. The Modern Library recently published for the first time in English, the late Haitian author Marie Vieux-Chauvet’s novella trilogy, Love, Anger, Madness. The three novellas are about Haiti when it was under military control during the mid-twentieth century. Vieux-Chauvet examines the country’s social and political structures under military oppression, giving voice to the injustice and tragedies that the Haitian people endured. While reading the collection; I was stunned and swept away by the image of Haiti from Vieux-Chauvet’s observant, honest, and uncompromising view of the Haitian people and human nature. My eyes were open to a country and a people that I had never seen before and the stories of their lives told in a compassionate, strong, yet gorgeous poetic voice. Love, Anger, Madness is a newly discovered classic that is waiting to claim its right place in literary greatness. |
![]() http://aalbc.com/reviews/looking_for_sweet_love.html There are several things to love about this book. For starters, it’s told in street-wise, no-holds-barred style that gives it an authentic feel. Byrd’s writing will remind you a lot of Carl Weber’s work. The setting within the studio of a radio station is clever and reads like a reality show with a banging soundtrack. The book touches on many relevant topics for blacks in various stages of their relationships, including the search for Mr. Right, the realities of adultery, and the consequences of having unprotected sex. But even in the midst of it all, Byrd never loses his sense of humor, which is laugh-out-loud funny. |
![]() http://aalbc.com/reviews/phenomenally_me.html Phenomenally Me is the first collection from Kansas born African American poet Sarah J. Heidelberg, and a lively and impressive compilation it is; by turns emotional and thoughtful, joyful and melancholy, blending the discipline and technique of formal lyric verse with the brashness and daring of performance poetry. |
![]() http://aalbc.com/reviews/white_coat_fever.html Roland S. Jefferson, author of the classic The School on 103rd Street, is back on the scene with his latest novel, White Coat Fever. The title of the novel is derived from a term used for women looking to hook up with medical students. The novel takes place in the early 1960s during the Civil Right movement and involves three friends and the path they have chosen for themselves. White Coat Fever is one hell of a read. Despite a few missteps with a few historical events, Jefferson does a fine job telling the story and keeping true to its historical setting. I loved it. |
![]() http://www.aalbc.com/reviews/stages.html Stages, the debut novel by Malikah Reese Maccabee is a wonderfully written and very engaging story about women of color in crisis, broken women whose faith holds them together despite the adversity, pain and betrayal that they have faced. They come together in various stages of conflict from all over the world to attend a women's conference in Atlanta sponsored by Women of Culture United (WCU). It's Christian themes give it an inspirational flavor while the complete exposure of these female characters that explore the reaches of their lives and the dynamics of relationships with family, friends and lovers makes it a good example of women's fiction. |

![]() http://bit.ly/henrietta_lacks Anybody who thinks that the medical establishment’s secret exploitation of African-Americans in the name of science ended with the notorious Tuskegee Experiment of 1932 has another thing coming. Those familiar with the book Medical Apartheid are well aware that such nefarious practices have persisted to the present. However, the little-known case of Henrietta Lacks has got to be one of the most jaw-dropping yet. Born in Virginia in 1920, she grew up working in the fields on the same tobacco farm in tiny Lackstown where her ancestors had toiled for generations as slaves. She married and became a mother of five until, in 1951, she developed a very aggressive form of cervical cancer and passed away a few months later at the tender age of 31. She died a pauper and her remains were buried in an unmarked grave. |
![]() http://aalbc.com/reviews/life_of_olaudah_equiano.html Olaudah Equiano was 11 years old when he and his younger sister were taken from their home and sold into slavery. He was soon separated from his sister and became one of the millions of slaves forced to take part in the Middle Passage. Equiano will be renamed Gustavas Vassa, sold several times before being able to buy his own freedom. Equiano leads an adventurous life as a sailor, slave trader, and a member of an exploration team of the North Pole. Along the way, Equiano was introduced to and follows the tenants of Christianity. During the latter part of his life, Equiano turn into an outspoken abolitionist. After much prodding, Equiano writes the story of his life to expose the dehumanization, brutality, and cruelty of slavery and use it as a device in spreading the abolitionist agenda in Great Britain. The Life of Olaudah Equiano is a marvelous book. |
![]() http://www.aalbc.com/reviews/first_president_barack_obama.html What is likely to make this opus fairly absorbing for the average history buff is the fact that these real-time entries accurately reflect the pulse of the country at each moment of the campaign, as the political sands shifted back and forth beneath the feet of the pivotal players. It’s all recounted here, mostly in the author’s own words, from the Iowa caucuses (“All of a sudden, there is a sense that Obama actually could win this thing.”) to the Michelle Obama patriotism question (“Was it a big deal. Nope?”) to the Reverend Wright controversy (“I fundamentally believe that whites and blacks reacted differently [to] the snippets of Wright’s preaching.”). Overall, the astute observations of a partisan who never hid his allegiances yet still proved pretty prescient in terms of forecasting the outcome of the landmark presidential election. |
![]() http://aalbc.com/reviews/going_natural.html First, there was Black Hair, an enlightening expose’ which highlighted how Koreans control and reap huge profits from the billion-dollar, hair care industry in most African-American communities. More recently, we had Good Hair, which questioned our commonly-accepted definition of what constitutes good vs. bad hair while offering a sobering peek at all the chemicals, expense and daily rituals involved in arriving at a relaxed head of hair. Apparently, some folks have been cut off for so long from their nappy roots that they might need help in reverting to a natural state. If that is the case, an excellent primer on the subject, complete with instructions, pep talks and helpful illustrations of a variety of healthy, beautiful ‘dos is Going Natural: How to Fall in Love with Nappy Hair. |
![]() http://aalbc.com/reviews/my_holy_bible_for_aa_children.html This edition of the Good Book is basically the complete King James Version, but augmented by Cheryl and Wade Hudson to make it more appealing to African-American youngsters and teenagers. For instance, Adam and Eve are brown-skinned in the illustrations. This only makes sense since the oldest human fossils unearthed by archeologists were found in Africa. Another bright-colored drawing features what appears to be Harriet Tubman leading a few fugitive slaves to safety via the Underground Railroad. |
![]() http://aalbc.com/reviews/killing_willis.html In Killing Willis, Bridges honestly and eloquently chronicles his rise and fall in graphic detail, including his bottoming-out behind bars before finally finding redemption on the long road back to sobriety. Today, the happily-married father of two says, surprisingly, that he has no regrets because he feels blessed to have his wife and kids. A heartbreaking memoir of innocence lost, exploitation, failing and recovery, with a happy ending that’s all too rare when it comes to former child stars |
![]() http://aalbc.com/reviews/sistahfaith.html A timely-arriving aid in this regard is SistahFaith: Real Stories of Pain, Truth and Triumph. This intimate collection of tales of individuals overcoming adversity was compiled by Marilynn Griffith, who was sexually assaulted at 13 and became a mother at 14. The book is comprised of dozens of moving memoirs recounting nightmares involving everything from incest to rape to abortion to attempted suicide. This cautionary tome’s contributors come from all walks of life, including several celebrities, such as Bunny DeBarge of the renowned Motown recording group. She talks about how she turned to drugs to repress the fact that she’d been molested by a family member for years. She blames her terribly self-destructive spiral on being stuck in denial and without a shoulder to lean on. |

![]() http://aalbc.com/reviews/wesley_snipes.html Wesley’s many accolades include a couple of NAACP Image Awards and making People Magazine’s 50 Most Beautiful People in the World List. And he and his second wife, artist Nikki Park, are raising their four children both in the U.S. and South Korea. Here, he talks about his latest film, Brooklyn’s Finest, a gritty, NYC crime saga, directed by Antoine Fuqua, which co-stars Don Cheadle, Richard Gere, Ethan Hawke, Ellen Barkin, Lela Rochon, Will Patton and Vincent D’Onofrio. |
![]() http://aalbc.com/reviews/jill_scott2.html The talented triple threat has also published a book of poetry and made a phenomenal foray into acting via both the big and small screens. On TV, she’s handled the lead role of Mma. Precious Ramotswe on the Emmy-nominated, Botswana-based, HBO series “The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency.” Meanwhile, she’s received additional critical acclaim for her work in such movies as Hounddog and Why Did I Get Married? Here, she talks about returning to reprise the role of Sheila in the sequel to the latter, the latest modern morality play from Tyler Perry. |
![]() http://aalbc.com/reviews/janet_jackson.html Born in Gary, Indiana on May 16, 1966, Janet Damita Jo Jackson entered show business at the tender age of 7 when she appeared onstage with her already famous elder siblings at the MGM in Las Vegas. This debut, was followed by appearances at 9 on her family’s variety show “The Jacksons” which, in turn, led to starring and recurring roles on such hit sitcoms as "Good Times," “Diff’rent Strokes," and "Fame." Later this year, Janet plans to publish her autobiography, providing an intimate look at her life. Here, she talks about reprising the role of Pat in Tyler Perry’s Why Did I Get Married Too, one of those rare sequels which is actually better than the original. |

AALBC.com Film Reviews
![]() http://aalbc.com/reviews/brooklyns_finest.html What makes Brooklyn's Finest unique are its three discrete plotlines deftly interwoven by first-time screenwriter Michael Martin into a delightful braid with a nicely-engaging narrative. And the strands of the taut triskelion remain fairly insulated until the exciting conclusion where the protagonists’ paths finally cross. |
![]() http://bit.ly/harlem_aria Harlem Aria marks the ignominious directorial debut of William Jennings, who made the movie way back in 1999. It tells you something when a film takes over a decade to find a distributor. Basically, a one-man coon show that relies on crude jokes delivered in African-American cadence for comic relief. 100 minutes of Hell that had me reaching for my meds. |
![]() http://reviews.aalbc.com/why_did_i_get_married_too.html As for standouts, scene-stealer Tasha Smith turns in another one of her trademark performances as the volatile Angela, a shrill banshee whose over-the-top antics keep you in stitches whenever she’s on camera. Equally-noteworthy is Janet Jackson, whose character’s deeper development afforded her an opportunity to stretch her acting range. When you factor in that the production went on hiatus after the passing of her brother, it makes her scenes, many of which were shot while grieving, that much more impressive. Renaissance Man Perry proving he still has his finger on the pulse via yet another, madcap, marital melodrama apt to resonate with the collective conscious of the black community. |

AALBC.com Articles | ||||||||||||||||||
![]() http://aalbc.com/authors/chris_hedges.html Pulitzer Prize-winner Chris Hedges is the author of nine insightful assessments of American culture astutely deconstructing the state of the union from a variety of angles, perhaps most notably, “War Is a Force That Gives Us Meaning,” “American Fascists: The Christian Right and the War on America, “and his latest opus, “Empire of Illusion: The End of Literacy and the Triumph of Spectacle.” On March 1st, the uncompromisingly-frank visionary delivered a spellbinding, if pessimistic lecture at The College of New Jersey warning of the imminent demise of Western Civilization. It is Hedges contention that this decline “began when we shifted from an empire of production to an empire of consumption” which “celebrates image over substance,” adding that, in today’s “soundbite society,” reality no longer matters. He prefaced his hour-long remarks with an in-depth post mortem of the macabre spectacle surrounding Michael Jackson’s funeral, offering our obsession with such a terribly troubled soul as proof that the hostile takeover of religion by consumer culture is now complete. |

![]() http://aalbc.it/thebakala The BAKALA of North America: The Living Suns of Vitality asserts that the historical names given to the formerly enslaved Africans in the United States (Black, Colored, Negro, African, African-American) do not adequately reflect the spirit of the people. Asar Imhotep offers for consideration a name that is rich in meaning and wide in its application which accurately reflects the history, gifts, vision and purpose of African-American people. The BAKALA of North America takes us on a philosophical and linguistic journey that begins on the banks of the river Nile, to the forests of the Kongo; from the slave ports in Ghana, to the river of the mighty Mississippi. Asar Imhotep’s research, scholarship, synthesis and creative application of various disciplines convincingly supports the notion that the name BAKALA (the charcoal, enlightened, vitalistic, people of the sun) best reflects the personality of the African-American. The more fascinating aspect of this work is the notion that we've always been BAKALA, we just never realized it. |

![]() http://aalbc.it/baduvideo "I can't help thinking this was just the reaction Badu was gunning for: cheap publicity through titillation. Her high-minded explanation for why she did it is ridiculous: "John F. Kennedy was a revolutionary; he was not afraid to butt heads with America, and I was not afraid to show America my butt-naked truth." What "truth" did she communicate by parading naked? Her claim that showing her pixelation-obscured body to the world is the moral equivalent of the Civil Rights Act is stupid and offensive." — Bookfan |
