Playing with Destiny by Phillip Thomas Duck - Book Review by Thumper
http://www.aalbc.com/reviews/playing_with_destiny.htm

As incredible as it may seem, Im a tad bit in shock. I recently finished reading and actually LOVING a novel published by BET under its Sepia imprint; Playing with Destiny, the debut novel by Phillip Thomas Duck. I know some of you may be wondering if I have something against BET publishing company; not really, but more on that a little later. Right now, I would like to focus on Playing with Destiny. I loved Playing with Destiny! A novel which centers on two brothers lives and how their secrets have destroyed them; Playing with Destiny is a well crafted tale that captured my imagination and held it in a vise-like grip. The novel is a wonderful introduction to a fine new talent. Read the rest of this review.

The Apostles: A Novel by Y. Blak Moore - Book Review by Thumper
http://www.aalbc.com/reviews/the_apostles.htm

Y Blak Moores second novel, The Apostles, started with bang and finished with the finesse of a water balloon kissing a concrete sidewalk. The novel about gangs in Chicago showed the whole spectrum of my love/hate relationship with Moores writing. The storyline was nice, the characters were adequate, but the downsides were Moore killed time on characters and events that were inconsequential, the storys pacing was off, and the ending sucked! I have read better, and I certainly had hoped that Moore would have written better than The Apostle. Read the rest of this review.

What's Really Holding You Back?: Closing the Gap Between Where You Are and Where You Want to Be By Valorie Burton - Book Review by Kam Williams
http://www.aalbc.com/reviews/whatsreallyholding.htm

Separation of Church and State notwithstanding, God seems to be enjoying a much more prominent role in our everyday life. For the Red State/Blue State cultural wars are currently being played out in plenty of places previously secular in nature. For instance, judging by its jacket, What's Really Holding You Back? Closing the Gap Between Where You Are and Where You Want to Be appears to a run-of-the-mill, self-help book. Superficially, the most remarkable thing about it, appears to be the attractive black woman on the cover, it's author Valorie Burton.  Read the rest of this review.

Who Does She Think She Is? by Benilde Little - Book Review by Thumper
http://reviews.aalbc.com/whodoesshe.htm

Demons and condemned souls must be having snowball fights in Hell because I not only read another Benilde Little book; I actually liked it. I know, I know, it is strange but true. Who Does She Think She Is? will not set the world on fire, but the novel, based on the lives of three women, is a good read which I thoroughly enjoyed. Who knewcertainly not me? Who's Afraid of a Large Black Man? by Charles Barkley - Book Review by Kam Williams
http://www.aalbc.com/reviews/alargeblackman.htm

Barkley and Wilbon's methodology was simply to sit down and interview their subjects, allowing them to expound on their experiences. While most of the contributors were African-American males, some were white, some female. The list includes: golfer Tiger Woods, Senator Barack Obama, actor Samuel L. Jackson, President Bill Clinton, George Lopez, Rabbi Steven Leder, gangsta rapper Ice Cube, writer Marita Golden, movie producer Peter Guber, Reverend Jesse Jackson, BET founder Robert Johnson, actor Morgan Freeman and children's rights activist/attorney Marian Wright Edelman. Hollywood Fantasies of Miscegenation: Spectacular Narratives of Gender and Race, 1903-1967 by Susan Courtney - Book Review by Kam Williams
http://www.aalbc.com/reviews/hollywoodfantasies.htm

Actor Taye Diggs, Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, Miami Dolphins star Jason Taylor and some other high profile black men have recently been receiving hate mail threatening to castrate, burn and or shoot them for being married to white women. To understand the deep-seated hatred motivating their racist pen pal, you might like to turn to Hollywood Fantasies of Miscegenation, a highly academic, seminal study of black-white romance as portrayed in cinema. AALBC.com RECOMMENDS

My Jim by Nancy Rawles
http://authors.aalbc.com/nancy.htm

Told with spare eloquence and mirroring the true stories of countless slave women, My Jim re-creates one of the most controversial characters in American literature. A nuanced critique of the great American novel, My Jim stands on its own as a haunting and inspiring story about freedom, longing, and the remarkable endurance of love.

The Untelling by Tayari Jones
http://authors.aalbc.com/tayarijones.htm

Aria is no stranger to tragedy. Fifteen years ago, a family outing took the lives of her father and baby sister, leaving remaining members of this fractured family struggling to live with their own guiltreal and imagined. At 25, Aria believes she can reinvent herself through her planned marriage, with all its promise of a family of her own. But the reality of infertility changes Aria's life as swiftly and irrevocably as the urban landscape around her. With prose that is both eloquent and unflinching, Jones charts the emotional journey of her characters as they explore the painful territory of truth and the healing landscape of forgiveness.

Black Rednecks And White Liberals: And Other Cultural And Ethnic Issues by Thomas Sowell
http://authors.aalbc.com/thomas.htm

Black identity has become a hot item in the movies, on television, and in the schools and colleges. But few people are aware of how much of what passes as black identity today, including "black English," has its roots in the history of those whites who were called "rednecks" and "crackers" centuries ago in Britain, before they ever crossed the Atlantic and settled in the South.
