The Book of Night Women by Marlon James - Reviewed by Thumper

The Book of Night Women begins in 1800 Jamaica, on the Montpelier plantation. A group of female slaves, who call themselves, Night Women, are planning to free all of the slaves and kill every white person on the island.

...a literary milestone, an unforgettable achievement. It is not often that I surrender to a story completely, but The Book of Night Women is that captivating. It represents the best of literature: words which engage the mind as easily as it does the heart and leaves both changed for the better.

The Sons of Shea - Reviewed by Thumper
http://reviews.aalbc.com/the_sons_of_shea.htm

DaVohn, as an author, hammers away at the cultural nationalist themes of renewal and redemption of a community by its people, namely its men. It's almost a fictional vision akin to a novel which would have been written by a young Huey Newton or Marcus Garvey. When Bishop rides to the rescue to his community, he knows that nothing will be easy and that the stakes will be high. Like the Black Panthers or the Nation of Islam, he realizes that the frustration and hopelessness holding the people back is very potent and caused by their confusion by their daily doses of lies and dogma from their local ministers and politicians. He knows these are not opponents to be taken lightly.

Noire presents From the Streets to the Sheets: Urban Erotic Quickies - Reviewed by Thumper
http://reviews.aalbc.com/noire_presents.htm

My favorite urban erotic literature author Noire brings a short story anthology to the stage with Noire presents From the Streets to the Sheets: Urban Erotic Quickies.  If I did not see Noire's name on the cover of the book, I seriously doubt if I would have given the book a passing glance.  Since I gave Risqu a tumble a couple of months ago, I saw no reason why the erotic literature train should not keep rolling.  The anthology featured a few names that I recognized but had never read before, Jamise L. Dames and Kwan; many of the authors I have not heard of before and of course there was Noire.  The short story collection was better than I thought.  Although there were a few duds, the collection is good.  I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Eight Minutes of Heaven - Reviewed by Robert Fleming

Travis English, author of Knights of Paris, returns with his second work of fiction, Eight Minutes of Heaven, a story about Derek Treadwell, who gives up on the golden promise of Los Angeles, the city of angels, for love in a small town in Texas. His father, Frank, wants him to be a man and to start making adult decisions concerning his life and loves. Pops is very suspicious of Derek moving to Texas to be with his girlfriend, possibly remembering his hardscrabble days of growing up in the cotton fields of East Texas. After all, Frank is still a country boy at heart and he cant understand the motivations of his citified son.

Sisters & Husbands by Connie Briscoe - Reviewed by Thumper

The novel has a fair amount of drama in it that kept me hooked. In all honesty, Briscoe did not make the story messy enough. The novel is definitely rated PG. I was looking for something a little more demented. Briscoe set up a couple of perfect vehicles for good down and dirty drama to jump off, but she took the high road approach.

Written in a stark, poignant style that recognizes the power of space and imagery; Let the Lion Eat Straw is the story of the life of a woman who suffers through life's trials.  I was immediately drawn into the story and literally could not put it down until the last page was turned.  Let the Lion Eat Straw is remarkable!

Let the Lion Eat Straw is a timeless classic that was not recognized by the book buying audience as classical during its initial publication in 1979.  Time is on its side for 30 years later, I am hailing it as the classic it is.

Ever so subtly, she weaves a richness right into the fabric of her carefully-crafted tale which reflects a deep understanding of how to touch on the African-American condition in an understated fashion while simultaneously exploring a very universal theme to which people of any ethnicity can readily relate. Ms. Smalls has dedicated Kevin and His Dad to the source of her inspiration, namely, her dear nephew Kevin who was adopted by his altruistic Aunt Irene at the age of 7.

Passing Strange: A Gilded Age Tale of Love and Deception across the Color Line by Martha A. Sandweiss - Reviewed by Thumper
http://reviews.aalbc.com/passing_strange.htm

Passing Strange: A Gilded Age Tale of Love and Deception across the Color Line written by Martha A. Sandweiss is a book about an episode in America's history that is hardly explored anymore, passing. Usually passing is a term used when a black person, who has a light color skin complexion is mistakenly identified as a white person. In Passing Strange there is a twist, I call it reverse passing. Passing Strange is a true story of how a well respected white man, with some social standing, lead a double life as a black man in order to love and marry a black woman in the late 1800s. The story itself is highly intriguing. Passing Strange one significant failure is that Sandweiss in an effort to factually verify the story forgot to tell the story.

Something Torn and New: An African Renaissance by Ngugi wa Thiong'o - Reviewed by Kam Williams
http://reviews.aalbc.com/something_torn_and_new.htm

In his intriguing new book, Something Torn and New: An African Renaissance, Mr. Thiongo argues that separating Africans from their native language played a critical in not only their exploitation but in their continued capitulation to being regulated to second-class status today. The author goes on to say that black folks today suffer from an unrequited quest for wholeness, a thirst for knowledge of self which can never be satiated so long as they speak and write solely in the languages of their former slave masters and colonizers. For English, Spanish, Dutch, Spanish and Portuguese are rife with subtle color-coded symbols and messages which will only continue to reinforce racist notions of white supremacy for generations to come.

They Tell Me of a Home by Daniel Black - Reviewed by Thumper
http://reviews.aalbc.com/they_tell_me_of_a_home.htm

I was in the mood for a Southern gothic novel. For those of you who may not know, a Southern gothic novel is one that takes place in the South (surprise, surprise) and involves usually a murder or two, incest, anger, lust, longing, revenge and secrets all wrap in tears and twang. I let my fingers do the walking went on Amazon.com intending to get another Erskine Caldwell novel, instead I ended up ordering They Tell Me of a Home by Daniel Black.

I got caught up in the story rather quickly. Hell, I aint going to lie; I was caught up in the story when I read the summary on Amazon.com. They Tell Me of a Home served as a nice welcome card for the author. Black definitely knows how to tell a story. I will be reading more of him in the future.

Digging: The Afro-American Soul of American Classical Music by Amiri Baraka - Reviewed by Robert Fleming

The literary legacy of award-winning writer and poet Amiri Baraka continues to thrive as he releases another new book, Digging: The Afro-American Soul Of American Classical Music for his huge following of readers. Truthfully, there is possibly no Black writer not indebted to the mammoth influence cast by Baraka's incisive intellect and lyrical pen in letters and criticism throughout the 1960s and 1970s. He was the spiritual and political guru of the Black Arts Movement. With his seminal works of Black Music and Blues People, he set a very high standard of excellence in analysis and insight of our music and culture, but with his latest volume, the word sorcerer has completely surpassed himself.

DJ Spooky's Rebirth of a Nation
http://reviews.aalbc.com/rebirth_of_a_nation.htm\

Listen, if it's okay in the world of pop music for DJs to remix snippets of classic songs in order to rap over them, why shouldnt a hip-hop era filmmaker be able to do the same thing with an old movie, especially if its copyright is expired and its now part of the public domain? That's precisely what were dealing with in the case of Rebirth of a Nation, a sophisticated overhaul of D.W. Griffith's Birth of a Nation. That controversial silent flick from 1915 is frequently credited with setting the tone for the persistence of lynchings and other forms of oppression and intimidation of blacks during the 20th Century up until the triumph of the Civil Rights Movement.

Circus (Tsirk) - Film Review

Circus opens in the United States with a harrowing chase scene in which a popular circus performer named Marion Dixon (Orlova) is literally being run out of town on a rail with a baby (Jim Patterson) in her arms by a bloodthirsty lynch mob. Why? Because she's white, and the father of her child is black. With chants of nigger lover filling the air, she barely escapes with her life by jumping on a moving train. Forced to flee from her own country alone, the disgraced single-mom ultimately finds political asylum in Moscow where she is able to resume working as The Human Bullet, a vaudeville act in which she sings, dances before the big finale during which she is shot out of a cannon into a trapeze net.

Next Day Air - Film Review
http://reviews.aalbc.com/next_day_air.htm

Next Day Air is a throwback which brings to mind the mediocre Blaxploitation Era flicks from the 1970s. But where most of those low-budget productions were merely poorly-scripted, sloppily-edited, take-the-money-and-run rip-offs, this homage to that best-forgotten genre is actually a well executed, comic crime caper.

The movie marks the directorial debut of Benny Boom, the veteran purveyor of gangsta rap famous for making music videos for everyone from Snoop Dogg to 50 Cent to Nas to Nelly to Busta Rhymes. Here, he makes a remarkably smooth transition to the big screen with the help of a talented ensemble capable of breathing life into his host of colorful characters.

Born into Brothels - Academy Award-Winning Documentary Showing at Human Rights Watch Festival

When British photographer Zana Briski ventured to Calcutta, her original plan was merely to document the day-to-day lives of prostitutes working the seamy maze of back alleys scattered around the city's red light district. But she decided to alter her plans considerably soon after she was touched by the unfortunate street urchins residing in the whorehouses there.

For though most of the hardened hookers had long-since lost hope and had resigned themselves to their second-class status, Briski was surprised to discover that the women's ostracized, young offspring still harbored innocent dreams of one day escaping the squalor of the slums and rising above their inherited, lowly station. So, she summoned Ross Kauffman to India, asking her friend to videotape the heartbreaking plight of these underage social pariahs.

House of Payne, Volume 4 - DVD Review
http://reviews.aalbc.com/house_of_payne_vol_dvd.htm

In a recent TV interview with Ed Gordon, Spike Lee blasted fellow director Tyler Perry, comparing his TV shows to Amos n Andy and other demeaning programs from less-enlightened times. Is that criticism far? You can judge for yourself by checking out this 3-Disc DVD containing episodes 61-80 of House of Payne.

Mr. Lee notwithstanding, the sitcom has met with both critical and popular acclaim, between winning four NAACP Image Awards (including best comedy series) and being the highest-rated cable sitcom of all time. So, is this just a case of sour grapes, or does Spike have a legitimate complaint?

Sugar Cane Alley (1983)
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0002TSZMO/ref=nosim/aalbccom-20

I watched this movie last weekend and found it absolutely mesmerizing.  Here is what an Amazon.com reviewer has to say:

Touching without being sentimental, political without being preachy, this story set in 1930s Martinique is both lyrical and powerful. Writer-director Euzhan Palcy tells the story of a young boy who is orphaned at the age of 11 and sent to live with his grandmother, who works on one of the island's sugar cane plantations. Though he is bright, she realizes he has no future if he stays on the plantation. So she does what she can to keep him in school and away from the back-breaking, will-sapping hard labor to which she's devoted her life. Can he rise above his humble beginnings? Will he forget about his self-sacrificing grandmother and leave her behind? Palcy deals with these issues with great emotion but no false sentimentality in this poignant film. In French with English subtitles. Marshall Fine
