African Voices, a not-for-profit cultural arts organization, is dedicated to fostering cultural understanding and awareness through literature and the arts. Established in 1992, African Voices publishes a quarterly literary magazine and sponsors literary readings, art exhibitions, writing workshops and community programs.
The Magazine provides opportunities for emerging artists of color to gain experiences and exposure. Many contributors have gone on to have their works published in Newsday, Black Enterprise, the daily news, the New York Posts, Black Elegance, the New York Times and literary anthologies. Some of the visual artists featured in our magazine have been chosen for art exhibitions and illustration assignments.
African Voices exposes new audiences to past and present literary figures who are sharing the landscape of American literature. The magazine has published works from such talents as Dominican writer Junot Diaz and highly acclaimed poets/writers as asha bandele, Jessica care Moore and Notozoke Shange. African Voices 1997 Summer issue featured a rediscovered short story by Zora Neale Hurston and paid tribute to novelist Toni Cade Bambara.
