Justin Ellis

Justin Ellis is a writer and journalist whose first nonfiction book is The Cruelty of Nice Folks.

He is a projects editor for Defector, an employee-owned media company, where he oversees podcasts including Normal Gossip and Namedropping. His television credits include Wyatt Cenac’s Problem Areas on HBO and How to Fix a Drug Scandal on Netflix. Over the course of his career, he has also worked as a podcast host, magazine editor, media business reporter, and newspaper beat writer.

Ellis has held positions at organizations including ESPN, the Nieman Journalism Lab, and the Portland Press Herald. His writing has appeared in The New York Times, The Atlantic, The Boston Globe, GQ, DC Comics, and Dwell. He also hosted ESPN’s narrative podcast Doubletruck Stories, which featured in-depth reporting and investigations by ESPN writers.
