Biography

Tressie McMillan Cottom is an assistant professor of sociology at Virginia Commonwealth University and the author of Lower Ed. Her work has been featured by the The Daily Show, the New York Times, the Washington Post, PBS, NPR, Fresh Air, and The Atlantic, among others. Cottom earned her PhD in sociology from Emory University in 2015 with a dissertation on the legitimacy of for-profit higher education institutions. She lives in Richmond, Virginia.
