“What is the value of Black life in America?”

In Avidly Reads Passages, Michelle D. Commander examines four significant modes of travel—the slave ship, train, automobile, and bus—to trace the movement of her ancestors over the past five centuries. Through this exploration, she reimagines the traditional American travel narrative, offering an urgent reflection on how history shapes what moves us, as well as what prevents many Black Americans from moving freely or safely.

Rooted in her maternal family’s long history on and around plantations in rural South Carolina, Commander explores the ways her relatives have navigated—or been restricted from navigating—physical spaces, historical moments, and emotional landscapes. She reveals how Black lives have been shaped by the vehicles that promised escape from the constraints of American racism, yet often failed to deliver on those promises.

Drawing from personal and public archives, Avidly Reads Passages explores the histories of transatlantic slave ships, the opportunities and limitations of railroad expansion during Reconstruction, the lasting impact of school busing, and the efforts of Black Americans to negotiate mobility through automobiles and travel resources such as Travelguide and The Negro Motorist Green Book.

To better understand the complexities of slavery and its aftermath, Commander began her research by confronting the difficult evidence and persistent gaps within her family genealogy. What emerged is a powerful and elegiac meditation on working-class life in the Black South.

Commander demonstrates that the systems of intimidation, violence, surveillance, and restriction used to control Black mobility have not disappeared but have evolved over time, continuing to shape Black life in America. Neither the passage of time nor the passage of laws alone has guaranteed meaningful racial progress.

Despite these realities, Commander also celebrates the resilience and determination of Southern Black communities through intimate stories of survival, family, faith, and the belief that new worlds can be imagined, created, and reached.
