Bad Night Is Falling

When Black private investigator Ivan Monk takes on a case in a South Los Angeles housing project, he finds himself caught between corrupt police officers, gang members, and a murder charge of his own.

Tensions are rising in the Rancho Tajuata Housing Projects, and not just because of the summer heat. After a Mexican family is killed in a firebombing, anger and fear threaten to ignite the community. Authorities are under intense pressure to solve the crime quickly before the situation spirals further out of control.

At the request of the tenants’ security force, Ivan Monk is brought in to investigate. His search for the killer leads him into a tangled history that stretches back to the 1965 Watts uprising, uncovering layers of long-buried racism, corruption, and betrayal.

As Monk navigates gang rivalries, political payoffs, and institutional misconduct, he finds himself increasingly isolated. He clashes with the police, loses faith in a trusted mentor, and, following a violent confrontation with gang members, is indicted for murder.

Now Monk must clear his name while continuing his pursuit of the truth. With time running out and tensions in Rancho Tajuata nearing a breaking point, he faces the possibility that the next bad night in the projects could be the last.
