- Etheridge Knight Inc. is designed to promote the arts and the appreciation of the arts for youths, youths at risk, adults, seniors, incarcerated individuals and those underserved in the arts programming in the city. E.K. Inc. provides educational programs that foster an appreciation of the arts through the oral tradition for people of all cultures and ages. The Etheridge Knight Festival of the Arts pays tribute to the arts community and the Legacy of the late Indianapolis poet Etheridge Knight.

creative writing and literature at Portland State University in Oregon. He
has received wide recognition for his poetry, including a reading on NPR, an
Oregon Book Award for Poetry, and a nomination for the American Book Award.
Other works include 'Skins on the Earth', 'Love Is Not a Consolation' and

| Who is
Etheridge Knight? Indianapolis-Pulitzer-nominated poet and former
Indianapolis resident Etheridge is author of five books of poetry,
Knight was an advocate of poetry as an oral art form and is regarded as
one of the nations finest performers of poetry. He received numerous
awards and honors for his ability to bring poetry to life, including the
Before Columbus Foundation American Book Award, the Shelly Award from
the Poetry Society of America, and fellowships from the Guggenheim
Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts.
Knight was born in 1931 in Corinth, Mississippi, the third of seven children, and served in the Korean War. During treatment for war-related injuries he became addicted to drugs and was subsequently arrested and sentenced for armed robbery. He served eight years in the Indiana State Prison at Michigan City. His first book of poetry 'Poems From Prison' was written and published during his incarceration. In 1990 Knight received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Martin University (Indianapolis) and was commissioned the university's poet laureate. Knight's archives are at the University of Toledo (Ohio) and Butler University (Indianapolis) other papers have been given to the Indiana Historical Society. Knight died of lung cancer in 1991 and in 1992 was posthumously awarded the Indiana Governor's Award for Literature. In 1998 he was posthumously inducted into the Literary Hall of Fame at the 8th annual Gwendolyn Brooks Conference in Chicago, Illinois.
