Panel Discussion: The Writing Life Weaving Fact into Fiction?
Writers are often asked where they get ideas for a novel. While there are many responses, most authors will say they got their idea from personal experience, something they heard, or a public occurrence. Weaving fiction into fact takes research, literary license, and a vivid imagination that will produce a final product that appears as if it was all the author's creation. Each author's process of creation is unique. This panel of successfully published authors will share how they source ideas and create credible characters that carry their stories to their satisfying ends.
Panelists:
William Fredrick Cooper is the author of three books: The Critically
acclaimed novel SIX DAYS IN JANUARY, the Award-Winning National Bestseller
THERE'S ALWAYS A REASON, and a sports memoir ONE SEASON IN PINSTRIPES
Moody Holiday was born in Brooklyn New York. During her formative years,
Moody's mother remarried and moved to Orange, New Jersey where Moody
attended private school until her senior year of high school. Holiday
graduated from Montclair State University and thereafter obtained a law
degree from Seton Hall University School of Law.
Married for nineteen years, Moody has two sons and a Labradoodle. While she
enjoys a busy legal career by day, Holiday is also a sought after Zumba
Instructor where her love of dance and fitness is shared with a loyal
following.
An avid writer, Holiday has an insatiable appetite for spinning delicate
tales of seduction and drama. A gift handed down from her biological father,
Holiday is constantly at the computer during the wee hours and is known for
dabbling with two manuscripts at once. Holiday is popular for filling her
novels with conflict, crime and passion, which is in great demand among her
drama driven audiences.
Anasa Maat was born in Newark, New Jersey. She graduated from Central High
School in the city. She received her undergraduate degree from Montclair
University, and a Doctorate Degree from Rutgers University, New Brunswick,
NJ. Anasa retired from Public Education in 2000. She has since written four
novels, A LIttle Bit of Honey, 'Til Death Do Us Part, Kill or Be Killed, and
her newly released novel, Wrong?
Anasa has chosen her hometown, Newark, as the backdrop for her novels. She
continues to live in the city with her husband, Hadren. Anasa is the mother
of two and the grandmother of five. She remains active in the city where she
has served two terms as a District Leader and two terms as a member of the
city's school board.
Gloria Mallette is a national best selling author and a two-time winner of
the National Indie Excellence Awards and Winner and Finalist of The National
Best Books Awards in African American Fiction. On the heels of
self-publishing her successful second novel Shades of Jade, Mallette signed
on with Random House and later Kensington Books to write several
well-received, through-provoking novels. Mallette has been profiled in
numerous national magazines and newspapers across the country. To her
credit, Mallette now has ten published titles including her latest
self-published novel, SASSY. Returning to her roots as a self-published
author, Mallette is determined to sustain her literary voice to greater
success.
Troy Johnson is a technology expert and industry leader in marketing books on the World Wide Web. Mr. Johnson is the founder and webmaster of AALBC.com, LLC (The African American Literature Book Club). AALBC.com was launched in 1998, and is now the largest and most frequently visited web site dedicated to books by and about people of African descent. In addition, to his entrepreneurial ventures, Mr. Johnson has over 20 years of corporate experience; in roles ranging from designing wide area networks to managing international projects.
