What is a musical reading?
Simply put, a musical reading is a reading with music. There will be signers and
musicians, as well as actors who will voice the characters different points of
view. There will be a musical introduction and bits of music through out -- a
truly unique event!
Afterward there will be an opportunity to ask the author and performers questions. The presentation will last about an hour.
Wine and cheese will be served.

Members of Chrysalis have performed with Urban Bush Women, gone on tour with Bobbie McFerrin, induced standing ovations at National Poetry Slams, won the Newport Folk Festival Talent Award, and toured to Senegal West Africa with Baaba Maal and Orchestre Daande Lenol.
At Chrysalis Theatre, we often do spoken word, choreopoem music theatre pieces pouring libation to Ntozake Shange, Nikki Giovanni, Gil Scott Heron, Afrika Bambata, Cool Mo Dee, Sekou Sundiata, Queen Latifah, Anna Deveare Smith, Def Poetry Jam, The Last Poets, Hattie Gossett, Sonia Sanchez, Sun Ra and whoever is shouting wisdom from the street corner. We sample style, resurrecting soul for whatever we need to do and say now! We call on the ancestors and the unborn as we invent the future. Popular culture is our score, but we don't shrink from classic African funk, wit, or beat, nor do we run from the slings and arrows of Caribbean or European shores.
In Mindscape, code sliding in the tradition of Rappers, African American Baptist Preachers, and West African Griots, Andrea Hairston calls on any language to express what is necessary. Griots are poets, musicians, oral historians, praise singers, and diplomats negotiating community, conjuring identity. Griots shake time loose, allowing us to feel beyond our brief moments, beyond our skin. They dance down ego-trips, pour libation to the ancestors, and welcome the unborn. Illuminating the past, invigorating the future, these time-traveling Wordsmiths stand between us and cultural amnesia. Chrysalis will offer a music theatre reading of Mindscape in this tradition.
