Biography

Kenneth Irvine Chenault, born June 2, 1951, is the Chairman and Managing Director of the venture capital firm General Catalyst. A globally recognized leader in business and social advocacy, he is best known for his transformative 37-year career at American Express, where he served as Chairman and CEO from 2001 to 2018.

At General Catalyst, Kenneth Irvine Chenault focuses on investing in high-potential companies and mentoring founders as they build enduring, mission-driven institutions. Beyond the venture world, he is a leading voice in corporate social responsibility. He co-founded OneTen, a coalition of CEOs committed to upskilling, hiring, and advancing one million Black Americans into family-sustaining jobs. He has also been a prominent advocate for protecting voting rights and advancing racial equity within the American corporate landscape.

Kenneth Irvine Chenault joined American Express in 1981 as Director of Strategic Planning. Over the next two decades, he rose through the ranks, serving as President of the Consumer Card Group and President of Travel Related Services. Named President and COO in 1997, he assumed the CEO role on January 1, 2001. His leadership was defined by resilience and reinvention. He guided the company through the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks—which occurred just months into his tenure—and navigated the 2008 financial crisis, ultimately solidifying American Express as a global leader in payments and a gold standard for customer service. He remains one of the most successful and respected Black CEOs in the history of the Fortune 500.

Kenneth Irvine Chenault’s influence extends into higher education and the arts. He is a member of the Harvard Corporation and serves on the Board of Trustees for the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of African American History and Culture. His current and former corporate board service includes Airbnb, Berkshire Hathaway, IBM, and The Procter & Gamble Company.

Kenneth Irvine Chenault holds a JD from Harvard Law School and a BA in History from Bowdoin College. He has been awarded numerous honorary degrees from institutions such as Harvard, Yale, and New York University. He has been recognized by the International Rescue Committee and received the Wall Street Rising Leadership Award for his commitment to public service. He and his wife, Kathryn, reside in New York and are the parents of two adult sons.
