Biography

Kerry James Marshall (born October 17, 1955 in Birmingham, Alabama) is an American painter, printmaker and sculptor whose large‑scale figurative work centers Black life and history. Educated at Otis College of Art & Design (BFA 1978), he later taught at University of Illinois at Chicago. A 1997 MacArthur “genius” grant recipient, his 2016–17 retrospective “Mastry” traveled from Chicago to New York and Los Angeles. Marshall lives and works in Chicago, creating what he calls a “counter‑archive” of Black presence in Western art.
