Biography of Salaam Green
Salaam Green is a celebrated storyteller, healing arts practitioner, and the 2024–2026 Birmingham Poet Laureate. She is a native of Greensboro, a town in Alabama’s Black Belt region, known for its fertile black soil historically used for cotton farming and for its rich history intertwined with slavery, sharecropping, and the Civil Rights movement. She is a Kellogg Foundation Racial Healing Facilitator and Road Scholar with the Alabama Humanities Foundation. Green has held residencies at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, Auburn University, and the Wallace House. With over 16 years of experience, she uses poetry and community work to create spaces of reconciliation, education, and radical care.
