Biography of Shirley Neal

Shirley Neal is a Los Angeles-based author, journalist, and TV & Film producer whose works have focused on pop culture, Africa, Black identity, and cultural themes.

AfroCentric Style: A Celebration of Blackness & Identity in Pop Culture is the certified ghostwriter’s debut solo writing credit. The collectible gift book from publisher HarperCollins Amistad (released November 26, 2024) features hundreds of photos of trending pop culture memories, moments, and memes that have meanings often missed about Black history, culture, and identity.

In the journalism world, Shirley’s cover story for Forbes Africa highlighting Oprah Winfrey’s works in South Africa is among the franchise’s most in-demand issues. Shirley has served as a contributing writer and editor for Ebony Magazine, Moviemaker, and as guest editor of the special twenty-five-page magazine supplement for DISCOP Africa Magazine celebrating African Americans in Television.

The Emmy-award-winning producer and documentarian, who has garnered two NAACP Image Award nominations, has written and produced more than 100 TV programs for NBC, CBS, TVLand, A&E, BET, The Travel Channel, and TV One, including 60 Minutes, Living With Soul, The DL Exposed, Prince: Behind the Symbol, Biography, Tuskegee Airmen, Black Ladies of Song, A Laugh, A Tear, U.S. Olympic Fest, and TVLand: African Americans in Television.

Her film credits include Intore (pronounced In-nor-ay), a feature-length documentary about how Rwanda survived its tragic past by regaining its identity through music, dance, and the resilience of a new generation. The film earned top honors at the International Film Awards and was a Humanitarian Award recipient at the 2016 International Family Film Festival.

In 2016, Shirley also served as co-host of African Ancestry Radio, a seasonal series on Sirius XM.

The Boston University graduate with a B.A. in Liberal Studies earned her professional certification as a literary Ghostwriter from California State University Long Beach.
