Teddy Riley

Edward Theodore “Teddy” Riley is an American record producer, songwriter, singer, and musical innovator whose work has shaped the sound of modern R&B and hip-hop for more than four decades. Widely recognized as the creator of New Jack Swing, Teddy pioneered a powerful fusion of soulful R&B vocals, hip-hop rhythms, and electronic production that dominated radio, clubs, and charts from the late 1980s through the 1990s and continues to influence music today.

A Brooklyn native and musical prodigy, Teddy began producing professionally while still in his teens. By the age of eighteen, he had already contributed to chart-topping records and quickly became one of the most in-demand producers in the industry. His early work helped usher in a new era of Black music, bridging traditional R&B with the rising hip-hop movement through a futuristic, groove-driven sound.

Teddy is the founder and creative force behind the legendary groups Guy and Blackstreet. With Guy, he helped define the New Jack Swing era through groundbreaking albums that combined street energy, polished songwriting, and innovative production. As the leader of Blackstreet, Teddy continued to push creative boundaries, producing the Grammy Award–winning hit “No Diggity,” a global anthem that remains one of the most influential records of its era.

Beyond his work as a group leader, Teddy’s production and songwriting credits include some of the most iconic artists in music history. He played a major role in shaping classic records for Michael Jackson, including:

• “In the Closet”

These tracks contributed to the worldwide success of the album Dangerous. His collaborations with Bobby Brown, including the defining hit “My Prerogative,” helped establish the sound and attitude of late eighties and early nineties R&B. He has also worked with artists such as Keith Sweat, Heavy D and the Boyz, and Mary J. Blige, consistently setting trends rather than following them.

Renowned for his technical skill and creative instincts, Teddy was also a studio innovator. He embraced emerging technology early, incorporating various tools in forward-thinking ways, such as:
