Anitra E. Butler-Ngugi
Biography
Anitra E. Butler-Ngugi is an Associate Professor of Teacher Education in the Department of Early Childhood and Teacher Education at Prince George's Community College, where she has taught since 2001. Her research focuses on curriculum and instruction, language and literacy development, and ubuntugogy—an Afrocentric educational philosophy that places humanity at the center of teaching and learning.
Before joining Prince George's Community College, Butler-Ngugi served as a classroom teacher, reading specialist, and special educator in school systems across Maryland, Virginia, Washington, D.C., and Arlington County, Virginia.
She holds bachelor's and master's degrees in Elementary and Literacy Education from Bowie State University, a master's degree in Curriculum and Instruction with a specialization in Bilingual Special Education from The George Washington University, and a master's degree in Instructional Design for Online Learning from Capella University. She also earned a graduate certificate in Assistive Technology from George Mason University and is pursuing a doctorate in Curriculum and Instruction.
A passionate advocate for African-centered education, Butler-Ngugi develops culturally responsive instructional materials for Pre-K–12 students and teacher education programs. She collaborates with educators and content developers to create resources that promote representation, strengthen literacy, and help decolonize curricula.
She is currently developing an Afrocentric open educational platform that equips educators with tools and resources to integrate African history, culture, and perspectives into classroom instruction.
