James Weldon Johnson was born on June 17, 1871 in Jacksonville, FL. He was a prolific writer and legendary civil rights activist who produced several novels, a pioneering work of cultural history, the first major anthology of black poetry, and numerous treatises on race relations. He served as U.S. consul to Venezuela and Nicaragua and as secretary of the NAACP. James Weldon Johnson was one of the leaders of the Harlem Renaissance of the 1920s. His career was varied and included periods as a teacher, lawyer, songwriter (with his brother J. Rosamond Johnson)

Author of “Lift Every Voice and Sing” otherwise know as the Negro National Anthem or Black National Anthem. Johnson died June 26, 1938 in Wiscasset, ME
