Maaza Mengiste was born in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, and lived in Nigeria and Kenya before settling in the United States.
Maaza has a MFA degree in creative writing from New York University. She is currently Visiting Assistant Professor of Creative Writing at Queens College of the City University of New York and, a Lecturer of Creative Writing at the Lewis Center for the Arts at Princeton University.
Maaza’s debut novel, Beneath the Lion’s Gaze, was named one of the 10 best contemporary African books by The Guardian. Mengiste is a Fulbright Scholar and World Literature Today’s 2013 Puterbaugh Fellow.
