Robert F. Smith

Robert F. Smith is a philanthropist, entrepreneur and business leader. He is the Founder, Chairman and CEO of Vista Equity Partners (Vista), a leading global investment firm that invests in enterprise software through private equity and credit strategies. Vista also has a dedicated Private Wealth Solutions team that partners with wealth managers to provide eligible investors with the opportunity to invest in enterprise software.

Smith graduated with a B.S. in chemical engineering from Cornell University in 1985 and began his career as a chemical engineer, working at Goodyear Tire and Rubber and Kraft General Foods. After earning his MBA from Columbia Business School in 1994, Smith worked at Goldman Sachs before leaving to found Vista in 2000.

When Smith was just a baby, his parents drove him from Colorado to Washington, D.C., to attend the 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, where the family witnessed Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech. Though Smith was too young to understand Dr. King’s speech that day, his parents made sure to teach him Dr. King’s messages and principles as he grew up.

In 2017, Smith became the first Black American to sign the Giving Pledge, making a commitment to donate a majority of his wealth to charitable causes during his lifetime. In 2019, during his commencement address at Morehouse College, Smith pledged to eliminate the student loan debt of the graduating class, which he later expanded to eliminate the debt held by their guardians on their behalf. After seeing how his efforts were having a positive impact on the students, Smith established Student Freedom Initiative (SFI), which he is currently Chairman of, to focus on scalable solutions to the challenges posed by student debt. SFI provides eligible students at participating Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), other Minority Serving Institutions (MSIs) and Tribal Colleges and Universities (TCUs) with academic, financial and professional support.

Smith has also contributed to his alma maters, Cornell University and Columbia University. Between 2016 and 2022, Smith personally donated a collective $70 million across both schools to fund educational opportunities for students. He holds several board positions, including serving as Chairman of Carnegie Hall.

Throughout his career, Smith has been recognized for both his professional and philanthropic leadership. He was named to TIME100’s “Most Influential People” list in 2020 and has received the George H.W. Bush Points of Light Award (2022), theGrio’s Philanthropy Icon Award (2022) and the Carnegie Medal of Philanthropy (2019). Smith was included on Forbes’ “100 Greatest Living Business Minds” in 2017 for his leadership in private equity and innovative approach to enterprise software investing. He also made TIME100’s first-ever “Most Influential People in Philanthropy” list in 2025.
