S. D. Hines

Biography

Scot “S.D.” Hines lives in Alaska, where he helps provide medical care for the Alaskan natives. It was there that he first heard the stories of Michael Healy and his ship, the Bear. A history geek by nature, Hines wrote No Man’s Compass to tell the too-long-overlooked story of a man who arose from slavery to become one of the greatest captains in US history, one who arguably saved tens of thousands of lives. Besides No Man’s CompassMedusa and Ariadne.

When not practicing medicine or writing, Scot enjoys teaching and backpacking in some Godforsaken place where death and dismemberment is a real possibility. Healy would have approved.
