Notes
Jorkor is a Wolof word meaning "coming together"- this accurately describes the purpose of our group.
We are a monthly Book Club made of Black and Hispanic women currently living in Miami and Fort Lauderdale. The books we select are of political or social relevance to women of color. The book can be about individuals of any race, country or gender, and either fiction or non- fiction.
Today women are part of the Jorkor Book Club ranging from our late 20s to late 30s. Although some members are from Miami/Fort Lauderdale area, a larger number of us have- or still do- call Jamaica, Argentina, Canada, Trinidad, Gambia, Columbia, or Haiti home.
Our meetings are festive dinner events held a members' homes - just talking, sharing, and coming together as women of color - this is the heart of Jorkor.
