Notes:

At the onset a group of ladies expressed a desire to get together on a monthly basis, not just for camaraderie, but to further discuss and exchange information about a variety of books written by African American authors. We have since evolved to not only hosting a monthly meeting but traveling and fellowshipping with other book clubs (Jackson, Murfreesboro and Nashville, TN), inviting authors to our area to better foster an understanding of their craft, the writing and next steps (Vanessa Miller, Darrien Lee, Richard Reason Garrett, Christine Townsend just to name a few) and journeying to Atlanta for the National Book Club Conference. We have also had the pleasure of having others to call in and conference with us because their schedules did not allow them to communicate with us in person.

We have found this monthly gathering and our love of reading to be a game changer. Many of us found our way to Clarksville, TN because of our enlistment or spouse's enlistment in the United States Army. We have not had control of a lot things: deployment, uprooting and moving can sometimes take its toll. But, the one constant is that on the 3rd Saturday, we know we will see one another.

We read, eat and we celebrate each other. We have attended and supported one another through commencements (our own as well as family members). We have mourned losses (Patricia Curtis and many parents of our members) and we have supported each other in other ways. It has truly turned into a sisterhood. Annual dues are $60.00. This money is collected to ensure that the sister's birthday is celebrated and other milestones that are significant. We also have a Christmas dinner.

Our numbers can vacillate from 8 to 12 individuals. Because transfers and change of duty takes place.....our numbers are unpredictable. When opening the club up for new members...we vote on it. We want a sister to feel like she has a place to belong but we do not know want to take away from its general premise: "fostering a desire to read and embrace the work of our African American authors! We have on a number of occasions entertained the reading of books by authors who were not African American. However, before that is done, communication takes place and a vote is taken. Our list is crafted during the December meeting and no deviations take place from it (the host may change but never the reading).
