I Am…

The ’I AM…’ books were written to instill a strong sense of pride and self-esteem in Black children through introducing them to very potent Black revolutionary ancestry and some contemporaries who are proving to be real role models. The books target youth, ages 8-13, and are written in poetic form in order for the information to flow, reminiscent of the culture of Hip Hop many of us embrace along with our young. The illustrations for each luminary mentioned provide further connectivity to the powerful people described. Each book serves as an introduction to some very important Black family members, along with some relevant vocabulary terms. For each book, there is a fun crossword puzzle that allows the reader to test what he/she has learned. Black children need to know who they are and where they came from in order to blossom into all that they are capable of being.
