Beginning in nineteenth-century Haiti and ending in today’s Martinique, Dash analyzes he achievements and shortcomings of some of the most important literary efforts in their attempts to come to terms with the region’s characteristics- plantation origins, unfinished modernity, sociocultural heterogeneity, liminality, and archipelagic instability.
