Progressive Emporium and Education Center

About the Store

Existing in various iterations since 1978, Progressive is the oldest continuously operated Black owned bookstore in the metro St. Louis region. Started by the Sudan Illustrators cooperative, Progressive is not just a bookstore, it is a community hub, sponsoring book signings, classes, book clubs, and family-oriented Afrikan centered cultural activities. Those activities are closely aligned with Kwanzaa, Juneteenth, Black Love Day, Afrikan Liberation Day and the birthdays of Afrikan heroes and sheroes. We also provide a broad curated selection of holistic and spiritual items.
