Published by Johnson Publishing Company, EBONY was their flagship magazine. Founded in 1945 by John H. Johnson, EBONY had highest global circulation of any African American-focused magazine. The magazine ceased print publication with their Spring 2019 issue.

In June 2016, Johnson Publishing sold both Ebony and Jet to a private equity firm, Clear View Group. The publication went bankrupt in July 2020 and was purchased for $14 million by Junior Bridgeman in December 2020.

Today the magazine continues in a digital only format. The April 2023 cover is shown.
