Women’s History Month Literary Festival

Three women writers discuss the intersection of place, time, and culture in literature and in the live of women. The conversation will be moderated by Linda A. Duggins, senior director of publicity, Grand Central Publishing.

Pamela Newkirk is an award-winning journalist whose articles have appeared in numerous publications including the New York Times, the Washington Post, and The Nation. Her latest book, Spectacle: The Astonishing Life of Ota Benga, was listed among the Best Books of 2015 by NPR and was nominated for an NAACP Image Award. She is the editor of Letters from Black America and A Love No Less: More than Two Centuries of African American Love Letters and the author of Within the Veil: Black Journalists, White Media which won the National Press Club Award for Media Criticism. She is professor of journalism and director of undergraduate studies at NYU's Carter Journalism Institute.

Dolen Perkins-Valdez is the author of two bestselling novels, Wench and Balm. The Washington Post called Balm the "perfect post-Charleston novel," and NPR's Kojo Nnamdi Show picked it as a top summer read for 2015. Wench was chosen as a Top Ten Pick of the Month by "O, The Oprah Magazine," and NPR named it a top five book club pick of 2010. In 2011, Perkins-Valdez was a finalist for two NAACP Image Awards and the Hurston-Wright Legacy Award for fiction. She was awarded the First Novelist Award by the Black Caucus of the American Library Association. She teaches in the Stonecoast MFA program in Maine.

Karin Tanabe is a former Politico reporter whose writing has appeared in the Chicago Tribune, Newsday and the Washington Post. A graduate of Vassar, she is the author of The List, The Price of Inheritance and The Gilded Years. She has made frequent appearances as a celebrity and political expert on television.
