White British Author Writing the African-American Experience

Featured Replies

I wonder if any of you would be interested in reviewing my new novel, If Crows Could Talk, an American civil rights mystery. I am an award-winning agented British writer and the novel has just been published by a small press here in the UK. But I am British and I am white, so as you can imagine I had to do a lot of work to ensure I got this right. I am also a professional editor and writing coach, and I believe in exploring diversity in our fiction. I have even run workshops to this effect. The reviews for If Crows Could Talk so far have been great but I wanted to ask a book club like this to take a look. It is on am*zon or I can email the Kindle version for free if necessary to the first six people who ask for it.

Of all my work, this one started life as a short story twenty years ago and though I adapted it to a novel back then I knew I had to one learn to be a better writer (I as new to it then) and two, how could someone like me really do justice to this story, even though it lived inside me? So I set it to one side. A published novel later, and another 8 novels waiting in the wings, an agent and over 30 short stories published in collections and prize wins, I felt in 2020 I was ready to go back to it to do justice to this story that begged me to tell it.
